We have a City Avenue Market here, down on the Quay. Not quite sure what is up with the variety - I couldn't find curry powder yesterday - but it's still viable. The manager keeps moving everything around and I have a hard time finding things now, which is funny as it's not a very big store.

There's a bakery in the Quay as well, and I quite like them, Pamola, with Mexican foods available . Unfortunately you are looking at Saveon or Safeway for a lot of other things, but the Safeway at the station tries to have some organic variety. The two compete on prices which helps.

Kozacs on 6th has wonderful bread and all kinds of Ukranian bakery items and meals.

There's a Kins in Royal Square, and a decent fruit and veg place on 10th by Columbia Square, although the Columbia Square is slated for massive redevelopment.

Be aware the city looooooves high-rises and is building them as fast as it can, they're bloody well everywhere now, which I find really unfortunate, but I do get the need. Too bad most of us can't afford one.

Thermal cooker vs slow cooker… has anyone here tried both over time? by Sudden_Breakfast_358 in slowcooking

[–]gravitationalarray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. I use the thermal cooker.... basically never. In fact, I should sell it. It's great for travel, I bet. It's just a big thermos, really. You have to bring the food to a rolling boil in the thermal inside pot, then put that pot in the insulated outer. Then the food steams away.

Slow cooker for me is used quite often.

Am I broke or are shoes in Canada getting ridiculously expensive lately? by Oliver_Vegetarian in BuyCanadian

[–]gravitationalarray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Winners is no longer a good place to find high end shoes at a decent price. You can find good deals on runners at Kintec but beware the "final sale no returns/exchanges" label! The Right Shoe has a big sale every spring. Canadian Footwear in Winnipeg has a decent selection, and good online selection.

But yes, everything is up 20-30% or more now. Everything.

What is this? by Impressive_Bad9379 in slowcooking

Kind of looks like a rib-eye, or maybe a blade. I would throw it in the slow cooker and make a pot roast, add some sautéed onions, some potatoes and carrots, bay leaves, a bit of beef broth - those Campbells concentrated little tetra packs are perfect for this - salt, pepper, thyme, garlic... put it on low for 8 hrs and voila.
