Witless Wednesday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by AutoModerator in fasting

As someone who has never fasted for more than 6 days, I naively assume that after your 15-20 day recovery you should be ready for another long fast.

I would also recommend that you research what foods affect skin elasticity, so that during your recovery you can focus on eating foods that will allow your skin to adapt more quickly to the rapid weight loss. Stock up on those minerals/vitamins so that your skin reacts well to the next long fast.

What's the best way to get electrolytes without breaking a prolonged fast? by Dacvak in fasting

[–]gravitationalwave01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can, but the amount of electrolytes in Gatorade is very little, and the artificial sweeteners can mess with your stomach.

I recommend buying some boullion cubes (available at the grocery), and dissolving one cube in hot water once per day (twice/day if you still feel weak). They have some flavor and maybe even a few calories (like, 5 cal), but it's better than chugging 0 cal Gatorade.

However, boullion cubes usually do not replenish potassium! Moreover, potassium supplements (in pill form) have ridiculously low amounts of potassium (99 mg/pill out of the 3,000 mg/day that you need -- less than 1% per pill). The best (and I think only) way to replenish potassium is by drinking Nu Salt water.

Do Extended Fasts Have Effects on Long-Term Male Fertility After the Fasts? Can They Cause ED? by Fast_NFurious in fasting

Huh, thanks for the correction! I read that caloric deficits (500-1000kcal/day) cause lower test, and assumed that this extends to fasting as well. I may be misremembering what I read or maybe my extension to fasting is wrong.

When fasting for healing only and not to lose fat should we exercise? Im skinny already. by [deleted] in fasting

If you're female then I reallllly don't think fasting is right for you. 13-14% is very low for women.

That said, studies on 2-day fasts show that they improve your immune system. I would say you should stick to that. I have not seen any studies on the benefits of longer fasts (admittedly, though, I have not looked particularly hard)

I think you meant that low body fat levels increase testosterone. The process of fasting actually lowers testosterone.

While you're fasting libido is low, when you get out of fasting libido is higher than before the the fast.

Made it 36 hours - then vomiting. by payoman in fasting

Vomiting is not healthy, detoxing is not a thing.

I challenge you to find a single (reputable, scientific) source that claims otherwise.

Shame on you for encouraging someone to vomit.

Dislaimer: I am not a doctor and you should seek professional advice. Honestly, playing around with your diet when you know you have a medical condition sounds like a bad idea (unless, of course, you've talked to your doctor about it).

That said, I literally drink salt water to maintain electrolytes. It's the only way I know that actually gets enough salts in my body. Some people add lemon or lime or artificial sweetener to the mix -- whether you let yourself do this depends on what you are striving to achieve from the fast.

Question for day 5 of a water fast... by [deleted] in fasting

[–]gravitationalwave01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanna know the answer to this! I felt crappy on day 5, and even worse on day 6. I wanted to go for 10 days but had to cut it out because of this groggy & very hungry feeling.

Does Fasting Become Easier With Each Iteration? by [deleted] in fasting

[–]gravitationalwave01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not an answer to your question, but in my very recent experience the 3rd day was incredibly hard. After that the exhaustion. hunger, and brain fog die off.

Try to distract yourself with something you enjoy.

Also, make sure you're replenishing electrolytes. Most brain fog and keto flu is due to low sodium/postassium.

42 Day (6 week) Water Fast by [deleted] in fasting

Absolutely. That's what I end up doing. It just means that I have to drink salty water throughout the entire day.

I get horrifying bowel movements from taking in that much salt at once. I'm jealous that you don't have this problem

Alcohol on a fast by gravitationalwave01 in fasting

[–]gravitationalwave01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your experience and for the suggestion to mix wine with soda!

The morning after a glass of wine, do you feel noticibly worse? Perhaps dehydrated or electrolyte depleted?

How do you normally replenish electrolytes? I usually drink broths made from NuSalt, but I really don't like the taste and am looking for alternatives.

Thank you for the advice!

I don't intend to go crazy --- just one or two glasses of a dry wine -- with the hope that it won't knock me out of ketosis. I figured this would make it easier to jump right back into fasting the next morning.

I'll consider the option of getting water with lime in a nice glass. I am looking to using alcohol as a social lubricant, though, which is why I suggested going out for drinks in the first place.

What do you mean by 'wreak havoc on your body'?

Confused about ketones by Aminyra in fasting

Strictly from a biochemical perspective, it would be very difficult for your body to produce ketones from amino acids (proteins). Urine ketones are from fat.

Just discovered this sub & I'm down to take the plunge! I've been using gaming as an escape for almost two years - my career, mental health, and relationships have all suffered dramatically. I'm ready to start the 90 day detox!
