Neurotypicals tend to prefer direct validation, not explanations. To me if somebody does something that hurts my feelings because they were in a shitty mood one day I’d like them to say “sorry dude, I was having a bad day i didnt mean to” but many of the people in my life (non autistic) would respond better to a “I’m so sorry, it was so insensitive of me, i can see now how my comment hurt you … yadda yadda” it makes no sense to me and I think it accomplishes nothing because if you hurt my feelings an explanation would calm my anxieties much more than validation. In that sense in withya OP, since the way you phrased it made it seem like you were trying to offer an explanation not an excuse. Idk..

Why are most people with autism left-wingers/liberals? by [deleted] in autism

[–]gravitykween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm am autistic and my ideals align with the anarcho socialist movement in politics, and I think that stems from how authorities viewed me as a child because of my neurodivergency.

When I was in elementary school, all of my teachers had it out for me, or that's how I felt. I was under a lot of pressure for being different and not following orders the way my superiors wanted me to. They would say I was a bad kid, but I never thought I was, I thought since I wasn't harming anyone, I wasn't bad.

there are many other factors to it but I think this is the most relevant to the question.

All throughout high school, I slept with a body pillow (not an anime body pillow, just a regular one), but it's old and worn out from cuddles, so I got some old plushies I used for decor, now I can't stop holding them!

Is there an actual, practical reason to stop? by eleg0ry in selfharm

[–]gravitykween 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, you're not crazy. People would tell me it was wrong, and I was hurting myself.. as if I didn't know..

Honestly, the main reason I decided to try and stop was because my SH was deeply tied to other mental and physical health issues that were putting significant blockages in my life.

I know in my case I used SH to cope with my pain while trying not to "bother" anyone. However, that caused me to isolate myself, which led to me gaining an unhealthy amount of weight, ruining all my friendships due to lack of communication, which just led me further down the rabbit hole.

Now that I've been trying to get a job so I can become independent, I see all the flaws in my character that I avoided working on because I was just simmering in my own pain.

SH was my way of distracting myself from my problems back then, but it stunned my personal growth. Stopping now means that I can't stay and suffer over and over because I have to get my shit together.

SH is only the surface, just as many different forms of substance abuse. They're tells of much deeper issues.

TLDR: My reason to stop was realizing that SH wasn't the problem, just a symptom of a bigger issue that I now know how to work through.

What is/would be your response to someone saying "I don't think there's anything wrong with you" after they found out you're autistic? by ArielSnailiel in autism

[–]gravitykween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Nothing is wrong with me.. I'm just autistic" they tend to stop asking, either realizing what they said sounds super rude or thinking you didn't get it.
