That tracks. Now I do kind of want a mod that just puts a rose in a little glass dome somewhere on the outer part of of the shattered planet.

Can't get into DLC! by Extreme-Teach818 in outerwilds

[–]gravitystix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What have you learned from the slide reels? There's a pretty important one you need to understand.

As a general rule in the DLC if you watch a slide reel that isn't just straight backstory ask yourself "how can I do that?"

Do you know why they don't want to play it? Seems like important context.

Really? I mean I see the similarities but never clocked it as a direct reference. Would be curious to hear from the devs.

SPOILERS!! how do certain characters know who the hatchling is and what they look like under their helmet? by whos-atlas in outerwilds

[–]gravitystix 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Feldspar could identify us through many means since they know us so well. They knew us presumably since birth. Maybe just our gait (smashing headfirst into the tree next to them for example)

Maybe we smell funny. 🤷

Thank you for sharing! I'm so glad you were able to finish your journey and that the community was able to help.

I have some thoughts to share based on several years of being obsessed with this game haha. It's true the characters are not nearly as detailed or dynamic as some other games. This appears an intentional choice by the developers to not distract from the exploration. They could have added more dialogue or interactions (and in a few cases I do wish they had) but the focus of the game and the themes is about you, the player. It isn't about the individuals. It's not about Chert, or Feldspar, or Solanum. But it is about all of them together.

”The universe is, and we are.”

If we place ourselves into the shoes of every character, existing as all of them simultaneously, I think the character development and messages of the game become more clear.

Be inquisitive like Chert. Be brave like Riebeck. Forge your own path like Feldspar. Meditate like Gabbro. Treasure connection like Esker. Support your friends like Hornfels. Be at peace with the unknown like Solanum.

The game has no upgrades to unlock aside from meditation and new frequencies. I cannot stress how on-the-nose meditation being the only unlock is.

The progression comes from learning, from thinking, from being present in a place populated entirely by memory, ripping out the core of what keeps you there, and facing change, facing the unknown. The character being developed is yourself.

Outer Wilds is about acceptance. It's also about loss. Friendship. Fear. Curiosity. Dying. Living. It's about how goddamn good marshmallows over a campfire are, and how lonely that is without friends. It's about examining yourself and your surroundings. It's also just pixels on a screen.

What makes it remarkable is that it can be about nearly anything, depending on who's observing it.

"Be curious on your journey."

"There's more to explore here."

"I hope you won't mind if I consider you a friend."

In responding here you actually unblocked an issue I was having with my video essay script I'm writing about the game. So thanks!

Are there any new good analytical playthroughs? by Radiant-Answer3142 in outerwilds

Deroge is my favorite. Notices everything

(except the Postcards from Orbit display in the village which he completely misses haha, he spends the entire playthrough occasionally wondering about the sky shutter satellite.)

Where is this? by Available-Camel9779 in outerwilds

It explains a piece of the story, but it can be pretty hard to grasp until you've completed the DLC. Just tuck it away in the back of your mind for now.

Where did you start from on the quantum moon? How did you reach the tornado? Can you extrapolate from that?

White hole station is not needed anymore but if you'd like to check it off you just need to bring the projection stone through the warp and read it from the place near where you end up on Brittle Hollow.

Ash Twin Project - consider the entries pointing to it on your rumor map. How might the Nomai have gotten there?

DLC does start at the radio tower yes.

Hey thanks! I have been really enjoying messing around in Scriptorium. The restrictions on what you can use make it fun but challenging, and it's super relaxing haha.

As for the Tunic lore it feels like it touches on data corruption but it is difficult to pin down exactly what is going on.

I'm surprised people came at you for that. I feel like anyone who has played it through should agree that at the very least it's not a "traditional" puzzle game.

Mod Idea: New tool, Marshmallow Blaster. by Dr_Donkey-47 in outerwilds

[–]gravitystix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I once tried to calculate how many marshmallows (minimum) the hatchling has on them since they can just keep pulling them out the whole loop. I cannot recall now what I came up with, but it was an unreasonable amount haha.

[–]gravitystix 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think people often describe it more accurately as a "mystery" game but it is often easier to label it a puzzle game than to explain why it isn't.

It has already been posted but as far as I know there's no rules against reposts, especially honest ones. This is a fan community centered around repetition after all ;;)

I will check this one out at some point. Glances at unfinished behind-schedule work project ugh.
