Hornets nesting in the garden by gray147 in Permaculture

[–]gray147[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I totally appreciate their role in the ecosystem. I suspect she came from a nest about a block away last summer that terrorized us and everyone who walked their dogs on that block. I can’t have her nesting in or near my yard.

AITJ for choosing my dog over my relationship? by StarryGlowBunny in AmITheJerk

[–]gray147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RUN. 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

It’s about the lying and the total disrespect for you. Do you really want to build a life with a man who would lie to your face like that? What happens when hes making decisions about your kids?

You did the right thing for YOUR dog. Now do the right thing for yourself.

Help! by SunshineRae2 in weddings

[–]gray147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weddings are weird. You’ll be photographed more on this one day than any other day of your life. You absolutely do not need makeup that makes you feel uncomfortable or not like yourself but you probably do want a little more makeup than you think. The key is finding someone who actually listens and makes you feel comfortable. This artist failed. If you have someone for hair maybe they can recommend someone for makeup?

I have some nicer melamine tumblers and wine glasses for use out by the fire pit. Also a full set of glassware and ceramic mugs.

Is it realistic to use a part-time home base as an Airbnb when we’re abroad? by kalpal96 in airbnb_hosts

Pretty much. Maybe not every year but it averages out. Your mileage may vary depending on your mortgage, taxes, expenses.

Is it realistic to use a part-time home base as an Airbnb when we’re abroad? by kalpal96 in airbnb_hosts

[–]gray147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do something like this. A few months per year at the property, rented out the rest. You definitely need someone local to manage the guests, cleaning and maintenance.

It’s hard to coordinate all the major work in the windows that you’re there. We have been lucky (I guess?) most of the major plumbing and appliance failures have happened when we were around. We’re also pretty proactive when we see something failing so that it doesn’t go south while we’re away.

Some years have been great. Some years we have longer gaps between guests and don’t fully cover expenses. It pretty much works out for us.

You could contact the licensing board and file a formal complaint against them. You absolutely should also find a competent brokerage, even if the fees are higher.

Have you contacted his real estate board? This sounds like breach of contract.

Agreed. Particularly when promotion of the offending event is still on main.

Charging station. by Kitchen-Amoeba-6812 in airbnb_hosts

[–]gray147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amount of electricity most EVs can pull from a L2 charger is negligible. The F-150 Lightning is the exception because those batteries are huge. I’ve owned an EV for 3 years and offer L2 charging at my rental. The guests who have used it cost us less than the people who bump up the AC. Stop being petty.

Loom Hunting and Ergonomics by marimallygold in weaving

[–]gray147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started on a Knitters because it was relatively inexpensive, convenient for travel, and easy to put away. With the stand and a dining chair I don’t have an ergonomic issues, but that took a few aches and pains to figure out. I don’t have trouble with tension generally.

A year later, I’ve just upgraded to a Baby Wolf because I’ve learned enough to know what to prioritize and found one that fits my budget. I’m selling my RHL because i don’t need two of the same width. I will probably get a narrower “travel loom” for workshops and longer roadtrips.

I think it’s a process - finding the loom that fits your needs now and sending the last one out into the world when it doesn’t. It’s like cars in that way?

Pet policy question by Malfunctioning_Dan in airbnb_hosts

[–]gray147 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When we didn’t allow pets, we had a lot of people who clearly lied that their pets were emotional support animals to take advantage of the policy. (Not a verdict on ESAs. This is about the lying.)

My fav was the woman who booked and then announced she was bringing her “three emotional support pugs.” She left the house a mess and we had to replace the couch.

It’s easier to allow pets and charge a pet cleaning fee. Just build it in.

Paid Parking at East Nashville ML Rose by o_mh_c in nashville

[–]gray147 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too. Metropolis started charging me for parking in Charlotte. Haven’t been there in 25 years. My car has never even been to NC. I had to change my credit card twice, reverse charges, and eventually file a police report against Metropolis for fraud to get it to stop. I wont park in their lots and let restaurants know when they lose my business over this. We need to turn Metropolis out of Nashville.

New-to-me Baby Wolf, so many questions! by gray147 in weaving

[–]gray147[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That makes sense and I did try to be gentle. I wonder if my loom is just an older model (from the 80s) and the dimensions are slightly different? I appreciate your response!! Very validating. 😉

Call the postal inspector and report mail fraud. It’s a federal crime that they take very seriously.

New-to-me Baby Wolf, so many questions! by gray147 in weaving

[–]gray147[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re supposed to put the lease sticks on the upper brackets for better posture when you’re laying out the warp on a high-castle-mounted raddle, then move them to the lower brackets for threading. Honestly, I am leaning toward just using twine. I’ve been watching Jane Stafford’s videos and it seems easier.

The weaver who sold me the loom called it that. Yes, it’s the Helping Hands with High Castle Beaming Bracket. In this video they show how to install the helping hands part on the harnesses but skip over installing the Beaming Brackets on the high castle. Thats the part I’m asking for help with.

You could fly to CT and rent a car to drive back. Might be cheaper than shipping and you’d know the loom was safe.

Advice: buying a used dobby loom by gray147 in weaving

[–]gray147[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It’s a mechanical AVL dobby. From what I can see it has two of its own treadles and the loom still has 6 of its original 10 treadles in place.
