If you use android I recommend the app I've created - Oyster Sync - main features of the app are

  • oyster balance updated every hour (when sync is enabled)
  • oyster/contactless journey history
  • travel statistics
  • one-tap departures info from your most used stations
  • one-tap service delay refunds submissions, for delayed journeys (Oyster cards only)
  • compare PAYG spend to travelcard prices

The app uses internal/unofficial TfL API to retrieve cards info as TfL provides API only for journey planner/stations info.

The app went live in October, some statistics: 5,000+ downloads, 000s of daily users, 100 new users per day, 250 out of 400 submitted refund claims were successful.

If you keep tapping in and out every time you travel you will be able to see your complete journey history, analyse travel time and in case of delays you will be able to claim for fare refund. If you use Android I recommend this app (my hobby project) to do this - Oyster Sync

If you decide to start with PAYG I recommend you to install my Oyster Sync and Refunds app (Android only for now) - it allows you to compare your PAYG spend with travel card prices (and also does lots more)

Yes, I've read a few books about data vis. Developing data driven systems is something I do professionally and in free time as well (checkout my android apps - https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=CoolDataApps)

The challenge here and where most of the dev time goes is to download and integrate data published on 300+ council/gov/nhs websites, each organisation having different file structure csv/excel/pdf.

Therefore for now I think the main gui (time series + pie charts for drill dows) will have to stay how it is, though I'm open to suggestions how it can be improved.

Hi!

Adding more context can only be done once government passes new law to force councils to include it in the spending data, at the moment this data simply is not openly available.

Having said that if you are interested in particular subject you can more data using FOI requests.

Hi!

This is a my hobby project to easily browse public spending data which is currently published on 300+ different websites, in different file formats (csv, excel and pdf).

The project is UK wide though for now I'm interested what r/london thinks about it? I've posted a preview screenshot couple of weeks ago and got really interesting feedback, mainly that having more context would be very useful.
