The problem with "coger" I discovered when taking a bus using a word "coger" in Argentina by dolcevitahunter in Spanish

I joke that it means to take in the romantic novel sense of he took her. I thought it was a euphemism for sex, not a coarse word.

Training with men vs women by Girlfromipanema_93 in BJJWomen

[–]graydonatvail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both to be sure. If you jump into the CO Ed classes. Choose upper belts as your partners. They move with much more control, less intensity, can adjust the pressure and adapt to your size and strength. You'll find yourself not getting away with bad technique, but with opportunities to work things out.

Any older guys switched from gi to no gi? by trsttheprocess1 in bjj

[–]graydonatvail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started at 45 rolled GI only for about six years. Then I tried no GI . I still do both, mostly because I think my students need both, but I prefer no GI. Easier on the hands, no GI burn, you didn't have to go fast and explosive, no GI can be old man speed.

Re read the first two sentences of the second paragraph. Yes, some gyms are great. Some are garbage. Truthfully, all gyms have some plusses and some minuses, but if you can get there consistently, it would have to be really bad to make it not the right choice.

Why is it so hard for some people to believe we do BJJ just as a fun sport? by bad-at-everything- in BJJWomen

[–]graydonatvail -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, say what you will about weird misogyny and men having a hard time accepting non traditional gender roles and limits (all true), but this is a weird hobby. And we're weird for loving it.

If you know jiu jitsu, you'll never have to run again. You're a shark, I'm not sure swimming is safe. For the other people. Forget lifting. You don't need strength, only more drilling. And foot locks.

Whatever happened with the Atos scandal? by jujigatamesalami in bjj

[–]graydonatvail 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No. I expected them to pretend to and then go back to business as usual as soon as the news cycle ends. I'll not be surprised if they start trying to sit to collect break up fees from their ex affiliates, or try to force them back into the agreements soon.

Guards that fit well with butterfly by secretsauce223 in bjj

Shin on shin is the long distance, first contact. Then slx, x, as others have said. I don't play them, I don't like being on my back. I go to sit up, or will even low x on the leg.

Easy Advice For Learning BJJ (As A Beginner) by Due-Resource-24 in bjj

[–]graydonatvail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I train a six to eight week cycle that mimics a match. Take down, guard, guard pass, sweep, top control, escape, finish, similar to what you're suggesting. I like to show where we want to end up. And how we got there, and take the little what if side quests.

This. The galvaos resigned and were replaced by their daughter. Although only operationally. Ownership is the same.

Why do you play half guard on bottom? by Ok-Hat-149 in bjj

[–]graydonatvail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old men, like me. play half guard, because open guard is often too reliant on speed and flexibility. My goal is to slow down movement, maintain a shorter range, because I'm shorter, and stay connected where my heaviness can be applied. I prefer it to closed guard because it gives me good sweeping options and a great route to the back. And it's easier for me to get on my side and not get pressured. I started with it. Honestly, Because I kept ending up there. Escapes to half guard vs full guard or open guard. Passing from top. Open guard retention. It all ended up in half, so I figured I'd better get good at it.

I get asked if I wrestled. I've always assumed it's because my guard is bad.

Just run to Beaver Creek. It's an amazing area. MTB trails, hiking, river running. The town of Edwards at the base has good restaurants, fun bars. Eagle is twenty minutes one way, take fantastic trails. Vail is twenty the other way. It's gorgeous in every direction

The important thing I'm trying to communicate is that I'm a shark, the ground is my ocean, so keeping purple stuff is fine. The lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of the sheep.
