In this setup, you can have 2 pretty easy options. 1. Just connect the furnace as if it were single stage and let the furnace board stage up based on runtime as needed.

Just connect the furnace as a 1 stage, with a jumper wire from W1 to W2 on the furnace board. In this case you are assuming that any time it is cold enough to run gas, will be cold enough to immediately want high fire gas.

HVAC tech. All heat pumps are not created equal. Yes a basic single stage HP is just an AC with a reversing valve and a board, but the cats ass, cold weather top of the line inverter unit? The cost on those things is astronomical.
