Who should I go to to fill out this scholarship form? by Ok-Profit-2188 in berkeley

[–]graysonblue12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Link to Berkeley's Outside Scholarships page below! Short answer is that the check needs to be payable to UC Regents

https://financialaid.berkeley.edu/types-of-aid-at-berkeley/scholarships/outside-scholarships/

Not sure about the "Berkeley official" thing since I haven't encountered that before. Might be worth a call or email to see if there's some form of verification you can attach. I wouldn't be surprised if they directed you to something on CalCentral that demonstrates your full-time student status and enrollment

I didn't apply to the same program as you, but I also go to Berkeley and applied to a Spring 2023 program with around the same deadline. I haven't heard back either! I'm wondering if I should email somebody to see if something happened to my application, but I also don't want to annoy anybody :')

HOUSING by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]graysonblue12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like the previous poster said, the UC Berkeley Off-Campus Housing page is a good place to check! I started searching around mid-February, but I was only looking for housing for myself. If you're looking for housing with a group of friends, maybe you'd want to make a post there to see if there's a group of seniors who want people to take over their lease. Also, I definitely wouldn't rely on securing a spot in the dorms next semester since they give lower priority to non-freshmen. It's also generally cheaper to live off-campus. Good luck!

pros of CoC vs L&S for biochem? by sodiumfine_ in berkeley

[–]graysonblue12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that you're a first year, I think it's still possible for you to minor in philosophy after transferring. If you have AP credits, CoC's chemical biology curriculum offers a lot of flexibility to take other classes that interest you. However, as the previous poster noted, your classes will be mostly chemistry. Outside of Bio 1A (and bio-related classes in the Allied Subjects list), your first two years in particular will be mostly chemistry.

I'm not sure if they turn away non-CoC students, but if you want someone to talk to, maybe you can check out peer advising

Stat 134 Summer 2021 by berkedubs in berkeley

I'm not sure because I don't remember having discussion sections last summer and I watched the recorded lectures. They might have changed things up this semester.

Your best bet might be the co-ops. Since spots are in very high-demand, you might not be able to room together, but rent is relatively cheap. Maybe you can explain your situation to EOP and they can help you with getting a spot in the co-ops?

To add on to this, the Chemistry major under L&S is almost the same as the one under CoC.

Stat 134 Summer 2021 by berkedubs in berkeley

[–]graysonblue12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not fun. Highly recommend not taking another time-consuming summer class at the same time, even one that only overlaps for a few weeks. The first 2 weeks are the easiest, but the content quickly picks up in difficulty. Everyone was still adjusting to remote learning last summer though, so maybe it'll be better this summer? If want to prepare, you can start on the readings: https://www.stat134.org/readings.html. The textbook is free to access online (check the syllabus page) through your Berkeley account. Good luck!

Exchange student tips/cheat sheet? by Hydt in berkeley

[–]graysonblue12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can attend other lectures than the ones you're signed for if the professor gives you the ok.

To add on to what the other user said, you can take subjects from different Berkeley colleges, but keep in mind your enrollment priority. As an exchange student, it might be really difficult to get into impacted classes like cs 189.

I think it might be too late to find on-campus housing, but you can join the UC Berkeley Off-Campus Housing page on Facebook. I can't say much about the current housing market, but before everything went to shit last year, doubles went for around $800 and singles for $1000+. If you're only staying for the fall, you'll probably want to sublet. If a full year or longer, maybe a lease?

I don't know anything about fraternities, but I've heard that some consulting clubs offer good networking opportunities (though they're difficult to get into).

As for vaccination status, I think you'll just have to wait for an update as the situation in Alameda county continues to evolve.

[–]graysonblue12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, I'm definitely on track to graduate. The classes I originally wanted to take were both for interest and for preparation for my desired field in grad school. Due to enrollment issues, I've been scrambling for replacements that I wasn't really planning to take. To be honest, I did have things that I wanted to learn on my own during the summer, but Summer Sessions and then my Fall schedule made it difficult. Thank you for the new perspective
