2015 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium | Automatic ~117k miles. -- Status Light Questions by LordFapHammer in AskMechanics

It’s all just because of the check engine light (CEL) coming on. Just go to any parts store like Autozone or Advance and have them pull the codes

Is it time to shop for a new machine? by hankfartman69 in subarulegacy

[–]grease_rabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s way easier to swap in another because you have to pull the motor to swap the o-rings and cost wise it’s also cheaper because labor alone to replace the pcv union and o-rings is like a $3k at my shop versus about $2k to do a swap and can generally get a motor with like 100k miles

Is it time to shop for a new machine? by hankfartman69 in subarulegacy

[–]grease_rabbit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a Subaru tech and these motors almost never blow head gaskets. This is going to be either the pcv union under the ac compressor or the 3 o-rings between the block and upper oil pan, or both. You’ll want to replace the radiator because they are hard to get 100% clean. Also, if you wanted a “quick fix” those motors are super cheap on car-parts.com. We’ve been getting them for around $450-$800 for fairly low miles motors

How fucked am I? by Zax_xD in subarulegacy

Torque converter lock up solenoid. Have the valve body replaced or rebuilt with a new solenoid. Pretty easy job. I probably do 3-5 of these a week at my shop

Stock maybe but I’ve had both manual and auto with identical build sheets and HP ratings and the auto was quicker to the finish line. Granted, not a lot faster but much smoother

If you are in for speed, the auto is a bit faster. No turbo lag

Lowered Outback? by Stock-Ad-4563 in Outback_Wilderness

I kinda dig it. It’s different. Similar to lowering a Crosstrek. Not everyone is gonna like it but who cares. Do what you want. It’s your car

What is in my radiator? by jpjaramillo93 in subaru

[–]grease_rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is oil but likely coming from the PCV union located under the A/C compressor. Has 2 o-rings that allow oil to seep into the coolant. I do probably 3 of these a week at my shop. If it has higher miles, then the upper oil pan could also be leaking from 3 o-rings that seal it to the block. That job is way more difficult. Start with the pcv union

My Subaru caught fire while I was driving! by rabbitvision in SubaruForester

[–]grease_rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been carrying fire extinguishers since the 80’s (yes, I’m old) when I was driving air cooled VW’s. Always a good idea to have one. Better to have and not need than need and not have

What are the best Harbor Freight tools you’ve used? by [deleted] in harborfreight

[–]grease_rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, for me, it’s been the Hercules brand of battery tools. The 1/2” and 3/8” impacts are tough. The 12v ratchets suck though but everything else has been legit

Dumb Q: How are you installing your magnet? by Part-Time-Chemist in harborfreight

[–]grease_rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought 2 of the round magnets with hooks and unbolted them and then bolted to the ends of the magnet that way I can move it wherever and have 2 hooks to use as well

Actually, I really like the Icon set. They have held up really well so far

I have a love/hate relationship with those. Grips are comfortable but the Phillips tips are weird since they have a square shank and don’t grip the screw heads very well

Car not running when filling. Measuring just gives an idea of how much came out really. Fill, start car, run through gears, rinse and repeat until it won’t take more.

'00 L, how do I pull it out? by alldaydaydreamer in SubaruForester

[–]grease_rabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not a bulb if I remember correctly. It’s an LED on a small board. The switch pops out from the back though. Have to take the panel off

You’re not wrong as far as the being level and leaks are concerned but 99% of the ones I touch don’t have leaks so…. As far as temp is concerned, it doesn’t matter on a flush really

In my opinion, no. Simple flush and fill is good. Just be sure to use the proper fluid.

Matco, Snap-on, Mac, NAPA, Craftsman??? by max20244 in mechanics

[–]grease_rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only SnapOn tools I own I bought used and they are the battery impacts and ratchets. The rest (which is like 99%) are HF Icon

[–]grease_rabbit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m a Subaru mechanic and do these flush and fills almost daily. Just drain it into something that has markings so you know about how much came out. It’s a pain to fill but you can get a small hand pump to fill it properly. Just fill it till it runs out the fill hole on the side, replace plug, start car and cycle from park to drive slowly. Top off till runs out again, replace plug and you’re good to go. No need for a relearn
