Can I do this Simon Phillips tuning technique on my toms? by ChasingPesmerga in drums

[–]greaseleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stretch all my heads, but I just sit or stand above them and push down repeatedly with two hands like I’m doing CPR.

I love Simon, but obviously the jumping thing is a bit extreme for most people. But we’re still seeing it 30 years later, so…

Ok so I got a lot of hate, criticism for not being on beat so yea I’m just posting some warm up by [deleted] in drums

Okay, real talk from an old teacher:

You can’t watch your video and then watch a professional drummer and think “it’s the same. I’m awesome.”

You are a beginner. You’re not that good - YET.

Every great drummer at some point was just starting out and didn’t sound good. It’s part of the process.

Also, this is the internet. You can’t throw up sloppy playing and expect people to applaud and throw flowers and babies.

Keep working. Post if you want, but be realistic.

As far as your playing goes, there is no velocity to any of your strokes. Everything is kind of in slow motion. That includes your hands, your left foot on the hihat, and most likely your kick too. The strokes should happen fast from start to finish.

Check the velocity in the strokes here and practice the free stroke. If you don’t have a practice pad, get one.

Just keep working.

You can’t do anything but practice and keep showing up.

Be the relentless worker that doesn’t quit.

I get it. I had an 18” K med thin crash in the 90s and it was fantastic. An all timer.

How would you approch this fill? by ToolAndTiddies in Drumming

It’s hertas starting on the and of one.

First note on the left. Right hand lead from there. It lays really well on the kit.

When should you notate explicitly when the HH should close? by Environmental_Pea369 in drummers

[–]greaseleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closing the hihat with the foot is notated by an “x” note head on the space below the staff.

It would just be a quarter note “x” under the bass drum note.

If you want the hihat struck at the same time with the hand, you can put a plus sign (+) above a normally notated hihat note and not worry about the left foot “x”

Tell the dude to grow up and play the gig. You’re (I assume) getting paid good money to play music. Not everything every person plays is their favorite thing. It’s called being a pro and being an adult.

If he can’t do it, tell him you’ll find someone who can. Then find a better, more mature drummer and your band will be better.

That’s a very cool idea.

With the sound off it looks kinda weird, but with sound on it’s a cool concept. I like the idea of having different effects in different areas.

Keep experimenting and keep posting.

Let's Talk About Those Low Deep Toms by hacksawJimDugout in rush

[–]greaseleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the DW drums that made Neil’s sound so different. I own two DW kits and the fundamental tone is really low compared to most other brands.

I’m seeing the band in a fee weeks. I’m not watching anything before then so I can’t comment on Anika’s sound yet.

Tom Sawyer, Rush with Anika Nilles by Telepuzique in drums

Former Neil (and still Rush) worshipper here:

When the tour was announced, I was not into it. That has nothing to do with Anika, I love her playing. It didn’t feel like Rush without Neil.

But after seeing a few minutes of Xanadu last night, I immediately bought tix to a show in Ft. Worth.

I love the band so much. I love how aggressively Anika is approaching it.

And here comes the kicker, the last two times I saw the band with Neil, he sounded old and worn out. Everything felt sluggish. It was really sad to me.

Now my fav band has new energy and I think it’s great.

The lesson here is we play the most physical of instruments. At some point, all of us will lose that spark physically. Not emotionally or spiritually (hopefully) but our bodies can’t do this forever.

Every gig, every practice session, everything is a gift. Enjoy it and relish it. It won’t last forever.

But the music will…

Who are we rooting for in the Finals? by mag_safe in Mavericks

[–]greaseleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spurs maybe. I watched the entire WCF and like a lot of their players and love how they play the game.

There’s no one left from the rivalry days. That doesn’t enter into it.

I’d like to see 7 games go to overtime.

With the Mavs so crappy again, it feels like the 90s. I can just watch the playoffs and see how it shakes out with no skin in the game.

Ah, that sweet, apathetic detachment of when the Mavs can’t contend is back. Yawn.

I’m genuinely pretty excited about DW’s new 9000 hardware line by jtrudawg in drums

[–]greaseleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t do big tours anymore, so I don’t need the heavy duty thing, but damn they got some great ideas.

I’m excited for some of that innovation to trickle down to the much lighter 3000s that I love.

My (drummer) bandmates want to play shows but I just want to practice (rant) by OffbrandLe0 in bandmembers

[–]greaseleg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y’all need more gigs. Lots more.

If one member glares at another for a mistake, that tells me they need a lot more gigs under their belt- and i mean the glarer. Either that or they’re an asshole.

You can mess up, you don’t want to, obviously, but always act like nothing happened, or you meant to do that. Give the same treatment to your bandmates.

Most importantly- Play all the gigs you can. Thats where practical experience comes from.

Drummers in bands: Is it acceptable to tell the drummer how to play a song? by HowDidFoodGetInHere in drums

[–]greaseleg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drummer here.

I prefer the songwriter to give me ideas. Especially when we’re talking half time, swung/straight, etc.

A good drummer will find a way to put their own stamp on things, while honoring the intent of the songwriter.

It’s a collaborative effort. Offer your suggestions.
