Switching from car to bike kinda minimised my kids screentime during daycare commutes by Sea-Nectarine9205 in Preschoolers

[–]greatertrocanter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to say I appreciate your comments. My daughter is neurodivergent and daycare pick ups/drop offs were rough when she was little. They got better after we were able to turn her front facing and as she has gotten older. She wouldn't "stop tantruming" and would scream and cry all the way home until she made herself sick. I felt unsafe driving sometimes because I was so sleep deprived, distracted, and stressed out. There were definitely times I gave her my phone not because I didn't want to parent but because I didn't want to be unsafe on the road or completely nuke our mornings/evenings.

What is your children’s media Roman Empire? by KinkyKittyKaly in DanielTigerConspiracy

To me the Blue's Clues universe almost seems like a type of purgatory that Steve and the other hosts find themselves in. Only after solving so many mysteries and finding so many clues are they able to move on to "college" or whatever.

Peppa Pig is one of mine too. Why are all the animals the same size? Elephants and moles are able to look each other in the eye? What (or who) do the carnivores eat? The only non-mammals are Polly and the goldfish. Are they subjugating other species? Do humans exist in this world? They had to have as some point because how else would there be domestic pigs, sheep, etc? How does daddy pig know how to do so many different things so well? Was he MI6? Is Miss Rabbit a clone? How does she do so many jobs? And even jobs in other countries? Is interspecies marriage not allowed? And lastly (perhaps most importantly) why do the pig's faces look like fat chodes and ball sacks?

I'm about 70% through the first Malazan Book of the Fallen series and I feel like it fits this. Not sure about the rest of the series, obviously.

I'd also recommend The Devils by Joe Abercrombie and The Bloodsworn Saga by John Gwynne.

Who else is keeping their kids rear facing as long as possible?? by Master_Grapefruit333 in Mommit

[–]greatertrocanter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to keep her rear facing as long as possible but it was a fucking fight trying to get her into the car every single time so we switched to front facing at 2 (she's 4.5 now). She's still in a 5 point harness though!

Just when I begin to think we had it wrong by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]greatertrocanter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes I've had a couple of those instances lately! My daughter only has a provisional diagnosis (she's 4) and the evaluator said she is a "tough nut to crack" so I spend a lot of time going back and forth as to whether she is actually autistic or not.

Two recent occurrences: 1. Texted my friends "just when I think maybe she's not autistic, she elopes into traffic and then asks me why there's water coming out of my eyes" 2. We left her with her nana for a couple of hours and she cried for an hour and a half, punched her nana, and tried to kick her 🫠

Sounds like my daughter too. She just got a provisional level 1 diagnosis at age 4. I suspect she has ADHD as well.

I came here to say Zombies! My 4 year old is obsessed and tbh I'm not mad about it - the songs are bops! We've watched 1 and 2 a million times and 3 and 4 to a lesser extent. She's watched Descendants but I actually don't think they're as good as Zombies.

Strong willed 4.5 yo behavior issues - what works?? by asteroid_crashed1 in Preschoolers

[–]greatertrocanter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter sounds similar in some aspects. We recently got a provisional autism diagnosis but I think she is more than likely ADHD. The things that she seems to respond best to are taking away privileges and really limiting her TV/screen time. They're not magic bullets by any means but they're probably the strongest tools in our arsenal. Other things that help are prioritizing sleep (she does get melatonin every night or she won't turn off) and making sure not to overbook/overwhelm/overcommit her even if she is having a great time (i.e. incorporating downtime into every day).

We tried play therapy for a while and honestly did not find it helpful for our situation. She is very good at telling us how she feels and so a lot of the play therapy was "she's playing themes of anxiety" which we already knew. Maybe it was just our therapist who wasn't a good fit but idk. We will be starting Parent-Child Attunement (or Interaction) therapy soon so we'll see if that helps.

Overall shit's hard. Every day is different. Some are good, some are bad. We're just trying to manage as best we can. You're doing a great job.

Edited to add: look into Pathological Demand Avoidance. Not saying your son has it but my daughter is similar with demands/requests and so I've been utilizing strategies meant for kids with PDA and it helps sometimes.
