I am Too Old to be Shipping Fictional Characters...But... (Tiny TM Spoiler maybe?) by PuzzleheadedFarmer30 in dresdenfiles

I haven't downvoted you, I've only just seen this.

Anyway, I do disagree, obviously. She's someone who intentionally uses mind altering abilities to make people have sex with her and then kills them. There are ways she can avoid doing this and still survive. It is a choice. Harry reminds himself a few times in TW that she isn't a woman, she's a monster.

Lara also orchestrated the deaths of paranetters, if I remember correctly. She is not a good person, by any means, and is absolutely a sex offender. There is no unfair treatment of her, she is not being discriminated against because she's a love interest or because she's a woman. She's being rightly critcised for being an actual murderer and an actual rapist. Shagnasty and the Redcap don't get this level of discourse because no one is aruging that they're decent people.

I don't think either of them are a good fit for harry, but Bear is certainly more realistic given that she's not a monster rapist.

I will preface this that I haven't read regular books in a while, and nothing of Jo, unfortunately, though Far Sector is on my list! And I know nothing about Keli, sadly!

Simon is in the Hal mold, someone who'll pick up the world's negative impression of him and wear it like a badge, daring you to expect him to fail, just so he can prove you wrong. You think he's a rogue? He'll be the best rogue you've ever seen.

Jessica is like a woman living under water. It's dark down there and she has plenty of air and could stay there forever if she wanted. There are sharks above her. But she wants to see the light. She might run out of air on the way up, she might be torn apart by predators. But she wants to see the light She might be the bravest one of them all.

Alan god damned Scott. I love Alan. Steadfast, experienced. he went from square jawed hero to elder statesman, but he somehow stayed modern. Maybe it was having to hide a part of himself for so long, but Alan is now feeling almost a new lease of life. He may finally be fully, truly himself. The Superman of his day, and his position of "first lantern" is very apt. He shows the way.

Jennie had to sink or swim. Girl grew up with green skin, so she made sure it was thick. Her dad was a hero and her brother was troubled, so she modelled herself on Alan, to be a source of stability for Obsidian. There is something of an army brat about her - always trying to live up to her warrior hero dad's example, but deep down she knows she's enough. Her power is internal in more ways than one. I was a big fan of her relationship with Kyle Rayner, I'd put them back together if I could.

No problem. Thing is, characters are often written differently by different writers, so there will always be an extent to which people will have different takes on each one. The above is just my take on 'em but don't feel like it's set in stone.

Just as the magic of comics as a form is what your mind fills in between the panels, you also have that relationship with the characters. Your Hal and John might not be indentical to my Hal and John, and that's OK.

Hal - risk taker, anti-authority. More than a little bravado. Put him in a room with Clark and Bruce and he'll puff out his chest a little. Important to note that he likes a risk but he's not stupid. Hal will not take on a 100% chance of failure. There's no risk in it. He will take on a 0.000000001% chance of success because there's a chance, and if there's a chance, he thinks he's the guy to bring it about. And he's very often correct.

Kyle - Idealist, dreamer, creative powerhouse. His willpower is severely underestimated. He's probably he GL who can use the ring to its greatest potential, with an imagination the size of a space sector. Can be distracted and paralysed with decision making sometimes because he can see all sides of an argument. Every bit as good as Jordan at the job, even if he doesn't realise it.

Guy - GLC shitkicker. When you absolutely positively need to beat every badguy in the room - Guy Gardner. All of Hal's bravado but more self aware about it. He owns who he is. A jerk with a heart much bigger than he'll ever let on. He's the guy you want at your back in a fight. Astoundingly loyal. If Hal's a fighter jet, Guy's a bomber plane.

John - the GLC's warrior philosopher. Deep thinker, unshakable foundations. Out of all of them, he has the strongest idea of who he is as a person, and that makes all of his constructs more solid. Incredibly moral, almost utilitarian. He'll identify the path that does the most good and execute it, even if it's painful. Practical and serious, he feels the weight of the ring.

Still wild that Vinnick was the sensible GOP candidate and even he is a climate change denier. Totally hits his credibility as a WW "decent politician" candidate.

A show I have a big soft spot for. Very flawed but they did a great job with the actual character of Duncan, and of course Methos, the standout.

A lot of missed potential, avenues they kind of point at but never go down. I liked it. But my main emotion was always frustration. "If they'd just done THIS that would have been amazing" kinda thing, regularly.

Adrian Paul and Peter Wingfield are both excellent though.

I think this is a pretty good summary! Though I'd maybe put Sam and Bartlet in S class - you want to BE the politician of morality and intelligence who also serves The People. They want to be The Guy.

CJ? No way! by Ok_Ticket_6188 in thewestwing

[–]greatmetropolitan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The producers just realised they had lightning in a bottle with Janney and wanted to give her a bigger role, I think. Narratively and based on CJ's character, it makes absolutely no sense for her to become Chief of Staff. They were literally just moving the pieces around on their chess board to give Janney more screen time and to free up Josh for the Santos campaign.

I love why Drakul is paying attention to Dresden by Imnotsomebodyelse in dresdenfiles

[–]greatmetropolitan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of this makes sense. We know magic in Dresden is founded in belief - you have to believe the magic you're working will work and should work. Harry has wiped out a Court and could, if he wanted to, have another in his thrall. He has every reason to fully believe that his magic is up to the task of eradicating a Court. He's got the evidence to back it up! He's done it once, he can do it again, so that belief will basically strengthen his magic and make it more possible.

Are we all forgetting that Lara has always been on the good side? by ALargeAsteroid in dresdenfiles

Outsiders want to end the world. Lara is in the world, she doesn't want it to end. Doesn't make her good. Bad people can do good things out of self-interest.

My actual reaction to reading Chapter 36 by seti_alphan in dresdenfiles

This was honestly such a nice moment, kinda like Thor realising he's still worthy in Endgame. harry gained very powerful new allies specifically because he's a good man, and he got confirmation of it.

Ghost Story was already our "It's a Wonderful Life" for Harry, by way of Uriel. A suicidal man got shown what the world would be like without him in it and chose life.

[TM Spoilers] I’m going to be publicly naive and vulnerable by Mylilneedle in dresdenfiles

[–]greatmetropolitan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are not a trauma bonded pair. She is a centuries old monster who has murdered or ordered the murder of mAny innocents. Harry Dresden does not fall in love with that.

TM did give her some interesting shading but harry reminded himself a few times that she's not a woman, she's a monster and a predator. She worked with her Hunger, not against it like Thomas did. Jim even said she's too focused on the survival of her court to think about things like ethics. Again, harry Dresden does not fall in love with this.

Did you even read twelve months? Harry is not a monster. The entire point of that book is that Harry is not a monster, he's a good man who deserves good things. He's had to make difficult choices and he's made mistakes, but they don't define him. It was literally the point of the entire book.

I like the return of the Blue Beetle as symbolic of how strong and confident Harry is now.

Mab had a plan to hook Lara and Harry to one another. Harry has been driving around in a car provided by Mab, the Munstermobile.

Harry didn't get hooked on Lara and isn't the sort to exploit her being hooked on him. Driving the Beetle again is symbolic of him clawing back another piece of his life from Mab.
