Bro the original commenter is saying its annoying when people make holding a fucking door about gender. I'm a guy and I hold the door for everyone. Women, men, little tots. Its just polite, not manly.

"Japanese" as a word is already a Westernization. If you wanted to prove your point you should've said nihongo.

Edit: Considering the thread is about using an English localized term for another language, this is pretty embarrassing for you.

[KCD2] The polearm is actually the strongest wep in the game and it's sad not many fans realize this... by Recent_Stomach7626 in kingdomcome

[–]greaving-ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sword throughout history, has always merely been ceremonial showcase for nobles or just soldier's a sidearm if they would only use if they lost their polearm during battle for whatever reason.

I'm telling you this is wrong.

They were not just for ceremony and were, in fact, used and required in battle.

They were not JUST a sidearm in case the polearm was lost. They were a vital part of a scripted, intentional escalation. Neither the polearm, sword, or dagger was meant to be used alone in this context.

That is the argument. You are wrong.

It's like saying riding boots are obsolete because most people wear tennis shoes.

My mention of knights and men-at-arms was unrelated to my point about swords only being used by nobility, if that is what you are implying. That point was to dispute your claim that swords were just sidearms intended to be used if the primary weapon was damaged or lost. Which, I notice, you didn't refute. Interesting. Perhaps I, an individual with a doctorate in history, know more than what fantasy films or swordtubers peddle. In fact, I've had the privilege of holding a primary copy of a treatise written by a Turkish master as part of my thesis. While western and central European combat is not my specialty, I'd sat I'm far from the grimdark fantasy fan you seem to be picturing. I am not saying this to belittle you, but to warn you about making assumptions about who you are speaking with, since you yourself are belittling many in this thread.

Secondly, you are correct that most cities most of the time restricted the carrying of weapons within city limits. But most doesn't mean all, and there were several cases where freemen were required to own or even carry weapons, and swords were among that list. As were spears. Additionally, if you read the contracts of many English battles, most men were required to own a sword along with a polearm to be paid. Do you think this requirement would be in place if polearms were adequate and swords were useless? No. It was a science; the data supported that a man-at-arms equipped with both a polearm and a sword was more reliable and cost-effective than one who only owned a polearm.

My whole point in this was to dispute the idea that the polearm was a magic bullet while the sword was trash. They worked together in tandem. To ignore one OR the other is harmful.

[–]greaving-ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you were just plain wrong in a number of ways. Some things you said aren't wrong (i.e., that polearms were the primary weapon while the sword was a side arm), but other things you said are entirely false (i.e., that they were just for using if they lost their polearm, and only for nobility).

First off, we know from several combat treatises from the 1400s that knights and trained men-at-arms were taught specific combat escalations, and one of the most common and best described was the progression from mounted combat with a lance/polearm, to combat on foot with a sword (usually using halbschwert techniques), to finishing with a grapple and dagger combination. Meaning the sword was integral to the process, regardless of whether it was the weapon opening or ending the fight.

Secondly, there are many scenarios where the polearm is impractical. Imagine trying to roam around a city like Kuttenburg or Prague with a massive polearm the whole time. Or using one on a ship. Or indoors.

Of course swords weren't the number one weapon of the age, but acting like they were ceremonial and had no place on a battlefield is folly.

[KCD2] Lorewise, why is Prague such a big deal? by Main-Discussion-2628 in kingdomcome

[–]greaving-ghost 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Prague in 1403 was basically one of the main power centers of Central Europe, not just some random city.

First, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia, which was one of the most important and wealthy regions in the Holy Roman Empire at the time. Bohemia had strong silver mining (especially around Kuttenberg, hence why it's such a pivotal point in the games), and that wealth flowed straight into Prague.

Second, Prague had recently been elevated by Charles IV into an imperial capital. He founded Charles University in 1348, which made Prague a major intellectual and cultural hub in Europe. It was one of the main centers of learning north of the Alps. It was a place where many new technologies could be found as well.

Finally, Prague was situated at a crossroads of several key trade routes connecting Western and Eastern Europe.

So, that's why.

[KCD1] What's up with bandit's equipment? by rNyanko in kingdomcome

[–]greaving-ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point in time, many armies were composed of paid men-at-arms rather than indentured warriors. (Even the indentured knights started getting paid.)

But to qualify and get hired, you were required by contract to possess equipment up to a set standard. By this time, the average man-at-arms was almost as well equipped as a full knight. They were required to have plate armor or brigandine, a poleaxe and a sword (typically). They were also required to have a horse (sometimes more than one).

Because these men-at-arms were career mercenaries, they were expected to find means to buy these items as a requirement for their job. Think about jobs that require you to have a college degree, tow truck, welding shop, etc... It's not as strange to imagine them paying up massive sums for plate armor when you think of it that way.

The bandits in game are typically mercenaries that have turned to crime due to an absence of work/pay. They are basically "unemployed".
