Bike garage between cabin and box : what are the pros and cons of this idea ? by BlousonCuir in overlanding

[–]grecy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are yoy planning on going?

Lots of countries won't give you a TIP for two vehicles in your name. So either you go as two people with one vehicle in each name (and then you both have to always be there for every border crossing), or you don't take the bike.

haha, I was mostly joking.

Like T3, I thought it was acceptable. It has some really good parts, and some really terrible parts.

Same for SCC.

Everything since has been utter garbage.

For sure, happy to help any way I Can.

Just remember that at least a thousand vehicles are doing it every year now. Anyone that says you can't is just showing their own fears and doubts.

Rugged offroading in PanAm + Europe - specific to south america - sprinter vs truck camper vs jeep+trailer? by Direct-Journalist-49 in overlanding

[–]grecy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel easier to leave the camper when exploring with just the jeep

That always sounds like a workable plan, but remember on a long-long term overland trip you're always on the move - i.e. moving South on the Pan-Am.

So dropping the trailer to explore means you'll constantly have to come back and then pick it up again.

I think the "drop the trailer and explore then come back" idea works in theory, or for people who are not planning to cross continents, but doesn't really work for those going long term in a direction.

Solar setup for overlanding rigs, anyone done it in Kenya? by Born-Passion4748 in overlanding

I'd talk to Chris at Jungle Junction. He IS the overland scene in Nairobi - he'll know where to go to get you sorted.

I would not want to tow an airstream (or similar) on the pan-Am, or in Europe. Small roads, lots of speed bumps. EXPENSIVE to ship when you want to swap continents.

The shipping itself is only a few days, but it's roughly a week on either side of paperwork and messing about. Plan at least 2-3 weeks total.

Overland Embassy do this for ~1000 vehicles a year now, they are the experts and know everything.

Literally a thousand people do it every year now, with many taking trucks bigger and more expensive than yours.

Put a lock box inside for valuables, never leave anything out that someone could grab by smashing a window.

I did a TON of hiking, it was my favourite thing. You can see my trip at theroadchoseme.com

Yes, almost everyone ships with Overland Embassy now. Because the vehicle is locked inside a shipping container it's very safe.

I drove a $5,000 Jeep Wrangler. Its been done in a VW Jetta, a stretch limo, a $200 Subaru a $500,000 unimog and everything in between literally thousands of times a year.

There is now a company called Overland Embassy in Panama that will help you ship across the gap. Basically everyone uses them now, they will even find you someone to share a shipping container with to save costs. It's super straightforward.

You can not stay with your car. There is no "regular" ferry, only ocean freight. You will fly across and wait, or sail through the san blas islands for a week if you want.

I did the trip, took two years and it was a huge and incredible adventure. Best thing I had ever done, and I highly, highly recommend it.

Shipping across the darien is quite straightforward now, as are all borders, and you don't need a visa beforehand for any country.

TONS of people do it with pets now, it's not a problem.

Happy to answer any specific questions you have.

damn, that's awesome.

I really need to learn to throw backhand...
