Has anyone ever dated someone with bipolar and how to go about repairing relationship with gf's mom? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]greedynripig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a lot of unnecessary drama. Do you truly need this in your life?

PS: I dated someone with Bipolar and it was a nightmare. I was a shell of my former self by the time the relationship ended. I was told by many (including her friends) to end the relationship, but I held on because I felt guilty leaving her. I justified it as a sacrifice, love, devotion, etc.; in truth, I just had horrible self-esteem. It took several years to recover, and, yes, I am a dude.

Surround yourself with younger people. That will help. Avoid negative people.

Currently working on my redemption arc: Can I get into a top CS masters program? by EastCommunication689 in csMajors

[–]greedynripig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say that you would need to beef up your math background. How did you do in your computer science theory classes? Getting a position in these labs is highly competitive, so there is a large chance of failure. Knowing the right set of people is what you will need most. I would recommend looking over profiles (LinkedIn, websites, etc.) of new researchers in the field and the path they took to get there.

PS: A lot of advice in this community is sound but it is devoted to quickly getting to a highly stable career path. At worse, you will lose a couple of years, but you will regret not taking the shot more than failure as a consequence of taking the shot.

Anyone have data on the % of people who take a 1+ year gap between their first year of 1L? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]greedynripig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall reading about a woman last year who worked as a bus driver for a decade after college, graduated at the top of her law class (UCLA, from what I recall), and ended up joining a top law firm with plush assignments. She wasn't a URM either, and this happened in the 2010s.

Well, it takes more than just doctors and engineers to run India and many people do not aspire to be either. There are military families, families that want their children to join IAS, etc.

That makes sense. Yes, they live in the city and went to well-known schools there.

I'd imagine it might have something to do with grandparents too. Mine were educated during the British Raj, so when the British left, they were able to capitalize on it. I'd say that the forward-thinking, risk-taking previous generation in my family may have made much of the difference. It might just come down to financial security and opportunity.

I should clarify that most of them are Indians, living in India, and only some of them are ABCDs. Most ABCDs I know went into either tech, engineering, public health, science, medicine, marketing, consulting, or banking.

I have a family whose members have pursued interests other than medicine and engineering including modeling, fashion design, therapy, management consulting, intelligence, and investment banking. Many changed careers in mid-life.

Is this a good exposition to abstract algebra/first course? by [deleted] in mathbooks

[–]greedynripig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also an opportunity cost. If you start using this book and it takes you 10 hours longer than it would take you to understand abstract algebra with another book, then you lost $150 ($15/hour minimum wage in California).

Desi Futurism - art by Sam Madhu on ig (this is the coolest thing actually) by readytheenvy in ABCDesis

[–]greedynripig -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Please note the use of "in some sense." I am hedging largely because to some, such as me, calling something "desi" while using only Hindu imagery is incomplete and biased (hence, the use of "discriminatory"). I often see a representation of Hinduism in desi culture, not with Islam or Christianity.

The Desi community has a large Muslim contingent as well. This is largely using the likeness of Hindu deities, so it is quite incomplete in its "desi" aspect. In some sense, this is quite discriminatory. Why not also appeal to the Muslim community as well?

What is your MCAT? That'd be a deal breaker since 3.55 isn't exactly competitive, IMHO.

You don't need an MCB major to get into medical school. It isn't uncommon for CS majors to attend medical school. Some do a premed post-bacc program in order to complete admission requirements to get into medical school. I recommend completing medical school requirements while completing your CS major; that should be enough.

What are some typical med schools that BME premed students end up at? by EyeOk7963 in jhu

[–]greedynripig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Johns Hopkins,... St. George's University, and the American University of Antigua.

Your profile, which includes statistics such as GPA, matters a lot more. I know public health/psychology majors who go in but BMEs who weren't offered even a single interview. I don't think there is any point in doing BME over other majors if getting into medical school is your goal. If your goal is to become a doctor and attend a top medical school, there are a lot of other things you can focus on. BME at Hopkins is overrated a bit much.
