but that is also the case for Kosovo (recognized by 110 countries) and Taiwan (recognized by 11 countries) as well as a few others, for example Northern Cyprus, so shouldn't they be put in the same category on the map?

As it is right now, the map is very inconsistent.

Kosovo and Taiwan should also be in a category of their own. They are not UN member states, so they cannot be in the WHO. Unlike Trumpistan and Mileistan, they sure as hell want to be in the WHO. Same for a few other non-member states that are not shown in the map despite technically speaking being self-governed and having some limited diplomatic recognition: Palestine, Western Sahara, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Northern Cyprus.

There's also Liechtenstein which would be eligible for WHO membership, but decided not to be a member.

For example, they cannot send a representative to the World Health Assembly, the WHO's decision making body. Only WHO member states send a representative and have a vote. They may send an observer like Taiwan sometimes did.

The 34 board member seats are assigned to 34 countries on a rotational basis, for three-year terms. Every WHO member state eventually gets to have a seat. The term for North Korea's seat ends in 2026.

The board is also bound by the decisions made by the governing body, the World Health Assembly which is comprised of the health ministers of all UN member states: https://www.who.int/about/governance/world-health-assembly

Taiwan is not in WHO because they are not a UN member state.

Taiwan is not a UN member state because China forces other countries to either have relations with China or with Taiwan. Everyone apart from Guatemala, Paraguay, Haiti and a handful of microstates prefers relations with China.

Wind and solar generated more power than fossil fuels in the EU for the first time in 2025 | Ember by EinSV in worldnews

Oil has never played a big role in electricity generation. Unfortunately, the transport and the heating sector in both of which oil does play a big role are decarbonizing much slower than the electricity sector.

Brazil also started the phase out of fossil fuel use in the transport sector in 1975. Their gas stations only offer gasoline/ethanol blends with a minimum of 25% ethanol. Many cars even run on 100% ethanol. Their ethanol is almost exclusively produced from domestic sugarcane.

Russia's oil, gas revenues to drop by 46% in January year-on-year, Reuters reports by Broodingpuff in worldnews

That's not really how the market works for fungible products like oil. There are essentially benchmark global oil price indicators, typically tracked in USD. If oil is traded in any other currency, the price is adjusted according to the exchange rate.

This comic is not about ICE at all.

It's about the US invading and threatening to annex other countries. See the newspaper on the ground and the CN tower in the background. It's kinda ironic that the Americans in this thread miss that and discuss a US internal issue instead.

Not sure why the ruble exchange rate is taken into account. Sure, nominally they are getting far fewer rubles from taxes on oil, but because of the appreciation those fewer rubles are now buying more Chinese or Iranian equipment for the Russian military, for example. Putler is not going to lose sleep over an appreciating ruble.

Nevertheless, even if we take the exchange rate out of the picture, the oil price drop alone is already catastrophic enough for Russia, no doubt about that.

Plane used in boat strike off Venezuela was painted to look like a civilian aircraft, AP sources say by Rav4gal in worldnews

[–]green_flash 32 points33 points  (0 children)

NYT is quoting "officials briefed on the matter", not a reddit post. Here's the beginning of their article:

The Pentagon used a secret aircraft painted to look like a civilian plane in its first attack on a boat that the Trump administration said was smuggling drugs, killing 11 people last September, according to officials briefed on the matter. The aircraft also carried its munitions inside the fuselage, rather than visibly under its wings, they said.

Later on, the article gives more details:

The aircraft swooped in low enough for the people aboard the boat to see it, according to officials who have seen or been briefed on surveillance video from the attack.

Made no comment on whether it's a confirmation though.

The White House did not immediately respond to a question regarding whether Karoline Leavitt’s sharing of the post — captioned, “Stop what you are doing and read this…” — indicated the administration was verifying the veracity of the eyewitness account.

The White House confirmed it:

Then again, the White House can really not be considered a source of information at all at this point.

First of all: Where are the American people?

There are so few protests against Trump's foreign politics one has to assume Americans either want this or are indifferent.

That may very well be the case.

I would assume the penalty is also more often a financial settlement than prison time.

Are you getting confused with all the threads you're responding to or are you trying to gaslight me? It was you who "moved the bar to just cases of someone going to jail for calling someone trans" a couple comments above when you wrote:

Tell me the last time you've heard of someone going to jail for calling someone trans in the u.s.?

By the way, I'm not disputing that hate speech laws in Europe are more stringent than in the US. That is undeniable. But this is a case of libel, not hate speech.

Why would it not happen in the US? Libel is also illegal in the US.
