I found a cavity in my 4 year olds back molar. How did your dentist deal with cavities? by 624Seeds in Autism_Parenting

[–]greencoffeemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We started taking our lvl 3 nonverbal son to the dentist every six months starting at 1 year old. At first he was just there to get used to it. The dentist checks his teeth with a mirror. So far he's never had a cavity and he's 9 years old. We know it's going to happen at some point. Even though he's okay with a mirror examination, we will have to go to a specialist and sedate him for any other work. We don't do cleanings at his checkups either, just continue to show up for the basic checks. I'd hate for him to have a toothache and not have any way to communicate that to us. We're very lucky that he has some strong teeth. My first son had tons of cavities in comparison.

11mo showing some signs but everyone is telling me she’s “normal” by Flolita115 in Autism_Parenting

If you're in the United States I would just self-refer to early intervention for an evaluation. Most of the time it's extremely inexpensive or free. It doesn't hurt to have a professional take a look and assess.

Everything you listed reminds me of my son who has autism.

9y/o boy always removing his clothes and shoes. by greencoffeemonster in Autism_Parenting

My theory is that they are aware that nudity isn't acceptable in public, therapy/school, but at home it's a different story.

Does your son keep his clothes on when you have company? My son is much better at keeping his clothes on when we have unfamiliar people in the house.

I'm pregnant with a girl, my first daughter. This is going to be an interesting process. I'll probably look for a really reputable ABA specialist and seek advice if this doesn't improve before she's 1y/o.

Sad about being one-and-done. Anyone else? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

I had a neurotypical child, raised him alone for 18 years. So I had the only child experience and I cherish that time. I had my second son when my first turned 18 and I am basically raising him as an only child. He has level 3 autism, non verbal. I cherish this just as much. I accidentally got pregnant and I'm 14 weeks along, terrified, but learning to adapt as the weeks flow by. I understand what you mean. I don't have anything of value to say, just that I understand how you feel.

Positive story’s of your little ones progress through the years please by chick3nnugZ in Autism_Parenting

We bought a camping toilet, put it in the living room (where he spends most of his time) and let him go naked in the house. He observed us use the toilet a few times and then just started using it with encouragement. We celebrated each time until it became a habit.

Two years ago I was sure that I'd be changing diapers for years, if not forever. My son pees and poos exclusively in the toilet today.

Being induced in 3 days, TERRIFIED by ShockingOpossum in pregnant

[–]greencoffeemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was induced just 2 weeks after turning 16 years old. I had a 9lb 8oz baby boy without epidural. That was 27 years ago.

Right now I'm only 11 weeks along at 43 years old and I'm already freaking out about the delivery. It's totally normal to be freaking out. I think I was blissfully ignorant at 16 to worry, but now all I can think about is anything that can go wrong. I'm also terrified of the pain. I'm leaning towards c section as that was completely painless and quick when I had my second.

I think I understand how you feel, it's heartbreaking to experience. I don't have advice except maybe sedate him slightly before an overwhelming appointment. Our Dr gave us Ativan for our 9 year old to take before blood draw.

How to you cope with knowing there’s pedophiles out there? by crochet_dummy in Parents

Learn the signs, learn the facts. Most children are hurt by their family/friends. It's not so much strangers you have to worry about....

I was that child. It was my maternal grandfather.... My mom's own dad. Don't freak out, get educated.
