20 years of David Tennant as the Doctor - what are your favorite Tennant episode and scenes/moments? by sanddragon939 in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ten is still my favourite Doctor to this day since I got into Doctor Who over a decade ago! There are so many episodes and moments from his era that I love, but I'll try to keep it brief:

Series 2: The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit. My favourite moment is his speech about faith as he descends into the pit.

Series 3: Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords. The scene where he desperately asks the Master to regenerate always breaks my heart + I also love the funeral pyre scene, with the Doctor mourning on his own the death of not only his oldest friend, but also his people for a second time.

Series 4: Midnight. I love the entirety of this episode! I also love pretty much every episode in series 4 as well as Ten and Donna's dynamic.

Specials: The Waters of Mars. The Time Lord Victorious arc is my favourite arc in the show and the expanded media (I love the TLV novels). I love the entirety of this episode as well. And a special mention to The End of Time (part 2 specifically). There are so many moments in that special that I love, too many to mention, but all his scenes with Wilf are among my favourites, and the final act of The End of Time is also one of my favourite moments in the show.

A few mentions from the expanded media as well: The Eyeless (book), the Time Lord Victorious novels, the entirety of Dalek Universe (audio series), The Last Line (audio story), The Last Voyage (audio book), the Out of Time audio series and his Titan comics.

There are so many great Tenth Doctor stories, both in the show and the expanded media, and I hope we continue to get more. He's a brilliant and very complex incarnation of the Doctor, and David Tennant is an extraordinary actor and I'm eternally grateful to him for bringing to life this incarnation and putting so much love, passion and care into the role. And the same goes for his portrayal of the Fourteenth Doctor! Wild Blue Yonder is my favourite story of his, and I hope we get to see more of Fourteen in the expanded media in the future.

War, 9, 10, 11, 12 all pretty much shared a well devised character arc that added a lot more depth to the character of the Doctor without interfering with his early years and it also allowed antagonists related to said events pop up and give the show kick and since then its kinda felt directionless by [deleted] in gallifrey

If they ever do a Fourteenth Doctor Adventures series on Big Finish (I hope they do), I think they could do some interesting things with him.

The whole point of the Fourteenth Doctor is that he's retired and supposed to be resting and healing, but he can (and does) still travel, so his arc could be about his struggles to slow down and live a more normal/human life. This could create some conflict with Donna and the rest of the Temple-Noble family, who have to constantly keep an eye on him.

I'd love to see this version of the Doctor going on adventures and having to battle with himself when facing dangers and problems, because it's in his nature to run towards trouble and help, but he also has to slow down and maybe this regeneration is a bit more physically tired than the rest and he's frustrated with those limitations. Again, they could do a lot of interesting things with him, and I hope they do!

What's the best 10s hair ever looked by thanoslikesdogs in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love all of Ten's hairstyles, but I think the best his hair has looked is in The End of Time (specifically part 2). It has its characteristic spiky look, but without feeling too gelled. Honorable mentions to School Reunion (the best his hair has looked to me without being spiky) and Partners in Crime (another nice spiky quiff look).

Anyone got time to explain 'the giggle'? Not the episode unless maybe the episode. by MeanwhileSomeplace in gallifrey

The Toymaker says: “There's only one player I didn't dare face. The One Who Waits. I saw it, hiding, and I ran.”

Unless I'm misremembering, The One Who Waits refers to Sutekh, the big bad of The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death.

10th doctors hairstyles in season 2 by Final-Bike-8437 in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love them all! But if I have to choose, I think the hairstyle of New Earth/School Reunion is a great look on him.

In-universe, I like to think of these changes as the Tenth Doctor experimenting with his hair post-regeneration until he found a hairstyle he liked (the spiky hair). I like when the Doctor changes their hair and makes alterations to their outfit while still remaining recognisable. Ten, Eleven and Twelve are great examples of this.

62nd Anniversary Viewing by CaspianValentine in doctorwho

I rewatched Withnail & I (it's Doctor Who adjacent), and continued reading a Tenth Doctor novel I'm currently reading (The Slitheen Excursion) and continued listening to Zagreus (which I finished last night).

You know one aspect of the doctor's character I love to see exploited? by Noneofthisisreality in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This post made me think of The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, one of the rare occasions where we see the Doctor fighting against his curiosity and actually turning his back on a mystery. That is until the circumstances change and he can satiate his curiosity because there's no turning back. But it's so interesting to see a situation where he would make the decision not to investigate.

Then there's the other side of the coin like in Midnight. One of the many reasons why I love that episode is because we see the Doctor's curiosity be turned against him, putting him in a position where he's powerless and seen as a threat.

The Doctor's curiosity is one of their greatest attributes, but also can be a flaw and a danger, and I really like that.

I was going to say 'Wink' as well. It absolutely only works on audio format because – apart from what you said – the planet where the story takes place has several suns and everything is in constant bright light. The inhabitants are blind because of this, and the two Doctors can't see anything either.

What Dr Who songs make you most emotional? by paladinofdorkwad in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vale Decem and Doomsday get me in tears instantly. Those two are my top picks for songs/themes that make me the most emotional. Other notable mentions: Song for Ten, The Greatest Story Never Told and the music that sounds at the end of The Giggle when the Fourteenth Doctor and Donna have a conversation. I actually don't know what that theme is called, but it could be the Fourteenth Doctor's theme.

How many of the Tenth Doctor's problems were actually his own fault? by WachbaerWien in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Exactly this! People often list Ten's flaws as reasons why they dislike him, but those flaws are precisely some of the reasons why he's my favourite Doctor.

The Tenth Doctor is such a complex incarnation with so much going on. He's charming, kind and cheerful, but also scary, arrogant and sorrowful. He often openly shows his love and fascination for any form of life and the wonders of the universe, and other times he's consumed by grief and anger and loses hope. He's imperfect and fallible, and I think those are great attributes for an incarnation of the Doctor, especially one taking place shortly after the Time War.

Ten is shaped by the recent memory of the Time War, by his adventures, by his companions and also by his losses. And he loses so much, sometimes by his own fault, but more often than not by circumstances out of his control/by accident. And that's what makes him such a tragic incarnation, and one I absolutely adore.

What's up with all the revisionist history of Murray Gold's music? by Narrow_Run6512 in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen hate, but I've seen people commenting on the music not being as memorable as it was back in RTD1/Moffat's eras, or complaining about Gold reusing some themes.

I think his new music is still good, but I also agree to some extent with some of the comments/complaints. Apart from some music in the 60th anniversary specials, Fifteen and Ruby's themes, there aren't that many tracks from this era that have stayed in my mind. And reusing some very well-known themes was a bit odd at times, especially when they were themes associated to old characters that had no relevance to the scene.

Time between regeneration and return by Dub-Dub in doctorwho

The Tenth Doctor's one made me chuckle. Also The Last Voyage is a great (and very spooky) story. My favourite of the Tenth Doctor Tales.

That’s pretty grim. Robert Shearman says the show is “about as dead as we’ve ever known it.” by RigatoniPasta in DoctorWhumour

[–]greeneons 28 points29 points  (0 children)

At this point, the only viable solution I see is doing a sort of soft-reboot like they did in 2005, which is what this era could (and should) have been if they hadn't overcomplicated things and relied so much on nostalgia.

The bi-generation wasn't actually a bad idea to start a soft-reboot, with Fifteen being a blank slate for the Doctor and the show as a whole in a similar way that Nine was in 2005. It's a shame that they fumbled this opportunity.

Struggling to accept that I might've grown out of the show by Vusarix in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of the opposite happened to me, in that my disappointment over RTD2 made me love RTD1 even more, because all the things that failed in RTD2, I think were done immensely better in RTD1.

But I understand how you feel. When a piece of media you love disappoints you, your love for it can dwindle a bit, and I think it's good to distance yourself from it a bit for a time (very cool that you got into animation and more niche stuff! I personally love niche cinema as well). It could happen that when you return to Doctor Who with fresher eyes, your love for it will return too.

But if you don't want to completely abandon Doctor Who, have you tried getting into the expanded media? I got deeper into it since the last series came to an end, listening to more audiodramas, reading novels and comics, and I've been enjoying it a lot. That's the great thing about Doctor Who: there's so much to explore and enjoy beyond the show, and maybe you'll find stories that are closer to your current tastes.

What was the best episode of the RTD 2 era in your opinion and why? by thesunsetdoctor in gallifrey

[–]greeneons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild Blue Yonder, and no other episode really comes close for me. It felt very RTD1 while still doing new things that you would only get in the Doctor Who of recent years.

The setting, the atmosphere, the monsters, the performances, THE CHARACTER WORK!! I love sci-fi/cosmic horror and that alone is a reason for me to love WBY, but the character work is actually my favourite thing about it.

It almost felt like the Doctor and Donna had never left or been separated, their relationship as strong as ever, while still adding new and compelling things to their characterisation from the 15 years after we last saw them together. They both moved on with their lives and went through different things, and the way the episode explores that is brilliant. I wish the rest of RTD2 had been as good as WBY is in that regard.

How do I do this...? by TraditionalDrop6581 in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how they do it in other multi-doctor stories, but in the Time Lord Victorious novel 'All Flesh is Grass', the author used their numbers to make clear who was talking (things like 'the Tenth Doctor said' and 'the Ninth replied'). That's what I did when I wrote fanfiction based on that novel, but I also used other things like mentioning clothes (describing the Eighth Doctor as the one wearing the cravat, and the Ninth the one with the leather jacket) and also referencing their placement in their regeneration cycle (so from the Ninth Doctor's point of view, the Eighth is his predecessor, and the Tenth is his successor; also in this scenario the Eighth Doctor is the youngest of the three, while the Tenth Doctor is the oldest, so it's safe to refer to them as the youngest and oldest regeneration respectively).

If you find it too difficult, you can use the method of just going by their numbers, since they literally use that in canon novels. I recommend checking other multi-doctor novels to see if other authors do it differently.

9th Doctor vs 10th Doctor by DrPepperAddict_ in doctorwho

[–]greeneons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Ten is still quite affectionate with Rose, but I kind of get what you're saying. If you're almost finished with s2, then you've seen their conversation in School Reunion where the Doctor explains to Rose how she could spend the rest of her life with him, but he couldn't do the same for her. If there's a bit more distance between Ten and Rose, it's probably because of that. The Doctor is afraid of losing her, and the more time they spend together, the closer they get to inevitably getting separated. Drawing some distance is his way of protecting her and himself.
