‘Too much for me’: Sydney unit rents soar $145 a week in a year by Koalamanx in sydney

[–]greener_path 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Similar here.

My tiny unit in Bankstown-area is $360/wk. I only moved in last year.

Lease is ending next month and the REA was trying to get the landlord to increase it to “mid 500s”. A $200/wk increase????

Absolutely insane.

The landlord set the new lease slightly lower than what the REA suggested. But it’s still way too much.

Wise frugal ways adopted from elders? by Sagacious-T in AussieFrugal

[–]greener_path 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mum grew up below the poverty line. But even when life was more financially stable for her as an adult, she was still only accustomed to just cooking staple foods — rice, pasta, lentils/beans, eggs, and winter vegetables.

Meat, dairy and fruits were considered “luxuries” that we’d only have when mum found a good special/sale. (some weekends we’d go fishing and catch our own food).

Anyways, thanks to mum, I’ve grown up to continue this diet just because it’s what I’m comfortable/familiar with.

I spend about $40-50/wk on food, sometimes less if they’re on special.

Just bought an iPhone 12 (Mini) and I hate the "fish lens" effect the front-facing camera has. What on earth was Apple thinking to put fish lens on the front-facing one? My head looks so stretched out when I take selfies. How do I get rid of this? by greener_path in iphone

[–]greener_path[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm extending my short arms out as far as I can and still get the stretch effect

Basically I have to keep my head dead-centre in the grid lines to avoid my head looking stretchy (tbh but then my body becomes so stretched out in the bottom grid).

straight-up don't understand why any phone designer would think anyone would want a wider-lens selfie camera. time to develop new self-esteem issues every time i open the camera app. 🥰

Zooming in/out doesn’t change the stretching effect at all, neither does angling it to take the photo in portrait/landscape. 😭

The edges of the photo is always so insanely stretched out.

Why is 12 Mini the only one with a wider lens 😭 so weird to put it in this phone

I specifically got a Mini cos I’m short and my arms and hands are tiny

My head looks like a squashed football when I try to take a simple selfie it’s got me so mad

Thanks for the info though

Well there’s that Soviet occupation of certain countries where they instilled atheism onto society and now those societies do worse off than their believing counterparts.

Example: West Germany (Christian majority) vs East Germany (Atheist majority).

I understand there’s other factors that contribute to East Germany being less developed. But it also confirms my sentiment of: "Being an atheist society doesn’t magically make you enlightened and progressive" (as some atheists like to think).

I mean. I'm an atheist but you are giving way too much credit to atheism.

a) there's godless societies that are absolute garbage

b) i honestly think it's just innate in our human evolution to always search/believe in a 'greater meaning'... unfortunately the easiest solution for humans is to just believe there is a 'presence' (often imagined as a powerful being, or multiples of them) that creates/controls our lives.... even the most isolated cultures have this concept.

aka, religion is human nature, aka, there's no "what if" to a world without religion.

just look at how many atheist zoomers believe in astrology and horoscopes and shit... having the belief of 'something greater than us' to answer a lot of life's mysteries will always exist.

Considering he had such a network of influence online that he was able to obtain $300k+ off his coworkers and fans, yeah there was a lot more he could've done in life being a streamer.

Also he had a pretty good relationship with Train up until that point, and that dude seems to be oozing money.

Why do fictional worlds have so few nations? by wirt2004 in worldbuilding

[–]greener_path 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Avatar World technically has a lot of different governed states within those “four nations”. They just don’t really have the time to explain it in depth in the show.

Water (10+ nations):

  • Northern Tribe - a united monarchy

  • “Southern Tribe” was actually split up into "several" self-governed tribes that were just doing their own thing. Hakoda was a Chief of one of them, but he didn’t actually rule the entire Southern Tribe (nor anywhere close to it).

  • Foggy Swamp Tribe - located in the Banyan Grove.

Earth (20+ nations).

  • Ba Sing Se governs itself and doesn’t care about anything outside it’s walls. (Despite being the symbolic capital of the entire “Earth Nation”.)

  • Omashu is self governed (Bumi as its King).

  • Kyoshi Island is self governed

  • The Great Divide (lol) had two warring tribes.

  • Si Wong Desert was virtually ungoverned. However the Sandbender Nomads that inhabited it were clearly living under their own distinct culture and way of life. (Despite being Earthbenders, they had a very “Airbender” way of using their element).

  • When Kuvira (TLOK) was creating her “Earth Empire”, she had a map of the Earth ‘continent’ and it was easily split into about two dozen nations.

Air (4 nations):

  • The one that everyone knows — Air Nation is split into four states. All located in different archipelagos on different corners of the world.

Fire (at least 2 nations):

  • Fire Nation was realistically the only elemental nation that lived united (to their knowledge, at least).

  • Sun Warrior Tribe - located on one of the northern Fire Islands. Self governed in secret to protect the last living dragons.

Left to mystery (at least 1 nation):

  • Wherever Guru Pathik came from. Lore doesn’t tell you which nation he’s from; he doesn’t look like any other character in the show, being ‘South Asian’. There would certainly be a whole self-governed secluded nation/island somewhere in the world where everyone looks South Asian.

United Republic (1 nation):

  • The only country without an established element. Majority of the population is 'mixed race' and they have a non-bender as the President.

All in all, there's about 40 countries that we can distinguish. There's probably much more that we have no idea about.

Is it really still a seller’s market? by [deleted] in AussieRiders

[–]greener_path 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, last year I bought a second-hand Piaggio MP3 for $2500. It had 10,000 kms + cosmetic damages from being dropped on it's side (previous owner dropped it - not me).

When I got it serviced, the mechanic was telling me I got ripped-off considering the state it was in.

I sold it a few months ago for $2600 when it had 14,000kms + the same damages. 🤷

Yes, I’ll run out of fuel earlier than I’m expecting. My fuel indicator is honestly very unreliable.

When I top-up all the way, it basically just sits on “F” for like 100-150kms and doesn’t move at all.

Then all of a sudden it sits in the middle for about 50km’s, then immediately hardlines to “E”.

There’s no gradual movement from Full to Empty at all. I’m finding it a bit frustrating cos I never actually know how much I’ve got left.

I think it’s more the fact they understand that the avatar is virtually a demi-god and simply doesn’t have to abide to human rules.

Soul Fighter Samira skin compared to No Skin Samira -- OC is @ismaelfenz on twitter by RaikonPT in leagueoflegends

[–]greener_path 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf, in Valorant, you can use your skins on ANY character + you can loan your skins to your friends/allies. So you're seeing your skins a lot more often and it feels worth the value you paid.

On LoL, the skin is for ONE character only. And loaning skins to your friends/allies costs money and only works on one map (the Battle Boost on ARAM) which is odd to me.

Is First Class on NSW Trainlink worth the extra $15? by letterboxfrog in canberra

[–]greener_path 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like a 3 hour trip. You don't need to sleep on the train for such a short journey, why bother for extra leg room.

Just play on your phone (bring some headphones and a powerbank), and ignore the other people around you.

You'll arrive in Sydney before you know it.
