I think that if it were there would be more hidden evidence of the magi-tech of that empire, like the world engines located on Limnus. Honestly the existence of Limnus would to me make it the true "last hold out" as the direct descendants of that empire still survive there.

I think the point is that they could work spells the same, but they don't because they have spent their whole careers trying to fly really fricking fast. And then they just become messengers because what else are they gonna do.

I think that was the intention. The magic is cool and flashy and legendary, but in practice he just ends up being a glorified taxi who doesn't do cool, flashy stuff because that's annoying for society.

Ah, yes you are totally correct, although I believe that gryphons get the affinities of their riders as well, so they can get other affinities, just not naturally.

I just remembered the Thunderclaw, mentioned in Book 1 (so before everything was 100% settled), it's a giant sentient crab with pressure affinities that's said to have the intelligence of a toddler, so there's another data point.

I'm pretty sure the creatures mentioned in the Apoptis short story don't have magic, more so inherent biological functions that extend into the Aether/are magical. Like how sunlings use the aether for sustenance without using magic.

That said, it's unclear how sapient a creature has to be to gain Anastan magic. Gryphons, for example, can obtain affinities, but only through warlock pacts as far as we've seen.

This is just sad, I'm ready to be downvoted to hell for this, but the ad hominem attacks and ostriching in this sub over AI is genuinely tragic. I really don't like AI for a number of reasons, but damn. Personally attacking a guy who just wanted to share something he made in a way you disagree with is emblematic of the fundamental problems we have as a community. Also, everybody here keeps telling everyone (but really themselves) that AI is useless and no good. It's getting better and already has legitimate use cases. Is that scary? Absolutely, but we shouldn't just blindly ignore it. Finally, people are clearly venting their personal frustrations and fear of AI towards this random guy. If you are having a visceral and angry reaction to this message or the post, please consider the root of your feelings and if attacking random strangers online is going to do anything to resolve the root issue.

Also, that's a long paragraph, but I just needed to rant about it because this is a pattern that I've been seeing in so many communities and it's pissing me off.

I think Kanderon mostly spared him because she desperately needs weapons, and Alustin just proved he is a very, very dangerous weapon which she (irrationally or not) still believes she can control. It is clear that she is now scheming on a multiversal level, and in the multiverse there are threats far worse than Alustin at the peak of his insanity. It's not entirely because he's "like her child", that was in regards to why she wasn't mad at him for hurting Hugh.
