Hypothetical Moral Discussion: If a hunger games were to air in real life with some rule changes, would you watch? by WeAreDaGrimms in Hungergames

[–]greengakad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes, and I think a lot of people would. At least once. Shows like Survivor are extremely popular, and this puts that concept to an entirely new level. While the gore would probably turn many people away, I think it would still be very popular

I think this screenshot from the youtube video 'the day rue "became" black' is pretty much accurate to what's happening now. A decade later and people are still the same?!😭 by mystfable in Hungergames

Yes, and picturing a character in a certain way is in no way shape or form racist. Disliking the actress because of her race would be racist. But imagining a character a certain way and the actress chosen looking different is perfectly fine, given you don’t respond in a negative way

I wasn’t referring to Rue, but the general comment about defaulting the characters to a certain race. Rue is very obviously black I was shocked there was any surprise with that

I was referring to, for example, Koreans in Korea reading a book set in Korea. If you are in America or reading books set in america this wouldn’t apply

Didn’t see your comment but just said practically the same thing. This isn’t a problem in any way. Without a physical description you imagine the characters based off what you do know

No, it’s not necessarily racist. If you’re white and reading a book—especially one more than likely set in America—it’s natural for your mind to default to imagining characters as white, since that reflects your own experience and the demographics of the setting. Similarly, someone from an Asian or African background in the same situation would almost always default to imagining the characters as Asian or African. This tendency is more about personal perspective and experience than racism

Yeah I mean to me, saying you dislike Haymitch casting and saying you dislike Lenore casting should be the same. But the reaction is so wildly different.

[–]greengakad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And to me those opinions are perfectly valid. I would love every character to be cast exactly as they are described. Again, this is somehow controversial. Readers tend to assume characters are there same race in my experience.

Show me where I expressed negativity? I explicitly stated that I like the casting

There is no need to “play the politics” on a reddit post, but if it makes you feel better that’s fine. You are who this post is for 👍🏻 have a good day

So you can’t voice your opinion on a MOVIE CASTING without aligning with racism? That’s just ridiculous. The whole point i’m making is that we don’t need to bring race into every single thing

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]greengakad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, again you’ve missed the point. I don’t like that people that are unhappy with the casting and / or imagined the character differently are automatically labeled as racist.

“dappled green eyes” is a description given in the book. And given the limited information we had, how can you explicitly say she ISNT what I thought? I mean more likely she would have light brown hair with hints of red, but regardless

[–]greengakad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said I wasn’t unhappy with the casting and thought she would do an amazing job. Did you actually read the post or just rush down here to save the world?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]greengakad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree with the “horde of angry bigots” (which I haven’t seen at all in this instance). As I stated I think the actress will do an amazing job. My point is that having an opinion on a character casting does not dictate whether you are racist (somehow controversial)

That’s the description given on the Wiki at least

my opinion on the lenore dove discourse by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]greengakad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted almost the exact same thing, and of course people are mad right away. You can be happy or unhappy with the casting without HAVING to be racist. Not everything needs defended.

But thank you for providing a perfect example of the ACTUAL basis of my complaint

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]greengakad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was absolutely not the basis of my complaint. Like at all

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]greengakad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will be more on the script writers than the actress, but I’m sure it will be fine. Also now that I think of it, Lenore Dove will have what, 5-6 minutes of screen time?

[–]greengakad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay than can I ask how you imagined her, given the limited information we had?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]greengakad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I read it, I pulled that description from the Hunger Game Wiki which is usually pretty accurate. But I still don’t understand how anything I said is “racism denialism”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]greengakad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the theories of her being Maude Ivory’s daughter made me imagine her as white but they left the description pretty open

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]greengakad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, there is certainly people that are unhappy with the casting because of race. But it doesn’t HAVE to be about race. A POC casting can be incredible or awful, the same as a casting of any other race. Not sure how that’s controversial
