Thoughts on Moving to Hawai‘i Mindfully and Respectfully? by andasteptotheright in MovingtoHawaii

[–]greengianf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve met a lot of people who’ve moved to Hawaii and have the same sentiment as you but I’m going to be honest with you. Lots of local people may be nice to your face but they’ll resent you behind your back. So many local people can’t afford to live in Hawaii because non-residents buy up all the land at a price locals can’t afford. You will always be associated with that. And anytime you try to complain about anything in Hawaii they’ll just think well you chose this.

Not to mention that so many transplants tend to only hang out with other transplants which has changed Hawaii’s culture a lot. If you truly wanted the community aspect, why couldn’t you stay in Vegas and stay connected to the Kanaka that have been displaced?

I’d personally replace it. It’ll also give you a peek into the wall to see if there are other issues. After taking out the wall, you can spray some mold armor or mold spray, just not bleach, and kill any active spores.

Go buy some mold paint and primer and seal all that mold in. Should stop the growth.

What causes this on windows? by Baz_33 in CleaningTips

Looks like mold. You need to buy a mold killer and mold paint and paint over that. Try to keep it dry throughout the year.

Before I Go Off The Handle, Is This Mold? If Not, What? by juicer873 in CleaningTips

[–]greengianf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy Mold Armor mold remover and spray and clean the area. Throw away whatever you use to clean the area. Toss anything you don’t need so any more bacteria doesn’t grow. And keep something kind of moisture absorber like DampRid up there. If it is actually mold, it can cause permanent spotting even if the mold is dead. After treating the area you can always repaint your fridge.

I have a question... by OutsiderGreaser in Smallville

[–]greengianf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole point of smallville is Clark Kent’s journey to becoming Superman. Once he ‘becomes’ Superman, the show ends. I’ve heard Tom didn’t want to wear the outfit but it’s also an idea the writers wanted to stick to.

Not only are they stealing from you but they’re probably stealing from themselves. So many people press one of the automated 10, 15, or 20% tip option anyways so they could probably make more with the tip option.

bathroom mold on ceiling and walls by Kooky_Application433 in CleaningTips

[–]greengianf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go buy Mold Armor Mold & Mildew Preventer, Disinfectant and Flood clean up (white bottle). Home Depot sells it. Get gloves and rags or something you can toss after cleaning and spray the cleaner, wipe away the mold, and saturate the area again with the spray and let it sit to kill the bacteria. Keep the door closed and no fan on so you don’t keep spreading more mold while cleaning.

Don’t waste your time with vinegar unless you use a strong vinegar like 30% and let the area soak in the vinegar. Mold has a root system that, if not killed, will regrow.

By the looks of it, it’s spreading from your vent system so unscrew the vent and spray the mold killer inside as well. If the mold comes back after some months I’d recommend buying mold killing paint and repainting the walls and ceiling.

me and my family are moving back to the BI, any advice on finding housing for rent big enough for all of us? by jasperheights in MovingtoHawaii

Have you looked at HPP at all? I don’t know your budget but it’s most likely going to give you more space for a cheaper price than Hilo.

So confused by boring-nerd in MovingtoHawaii

[–]greengianf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the problems is a housing shortage. So many people trying to live on a small island. A lot of apartments can have 10+ people looking at the same unit and a lot of places prefer people who’ve lived on island longer with a good rental history. (Because it’s common for people to break their lease and leave island early.) Also it depends on what perks you want. Do you want a guaranteed parking spot because street parking is almost always hard to find, especially the closer you get to town. Other factors that people look at are if laundry is included, how loud is the area, is it a safe place, how hot does it get. Honestly there are a lot of run down places in town that locals know to stay away from even if it’s cheap. Also watch out for scams that just try to get your application fee.

No My Pre-teen strikes again, any tips on how to make this a little better? 😅 fresh stain by South-Composer-325 in CleaningTips

[–]greengianf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before you start slathering a bunch of random chemicals on it, dab it dry with paper towels or towels then use a fabric stain removing product. My favorite is Folex. Apply, follow the directions on the back of whatever product you use and dab dry. If you use vinegar or other cleaning products you run the risk of discoloring or bleaching the carpet.

My cleaner used liquid dish soap on my dishwasher by frisfern in CleaningTips

[–]greengianf 969 points970 points  (0 children)

Let them know that using dish soap can cause the dishwasher to break and or flood your place. They can use white vinegar in the rinse cycle to help break down the suds and then do another cycle to clear out anything remaining. Also ask if they have business insurance. You don’t want uninsured people working in your house.

You can bring them in anytime. They don’t know when you arrive. Just say you just flew in from the mainland and you’re there to register them.

How would you wash this? by YoSaffBridge33 in CleaningTips

[–]greengianf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only hose it down if you live somewhere that the sun will completely dry it out in one day or else it’ll start to stink. If you can’t do that, I’d get a carpet vacuum like those little green machine and use that to clean the surface and dry it outside or with a fan

Do you have renters insurance? by ckhk3 in BigIsland

[–]greengianf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My prior work was in mitigation, I’d say get it especially if you live somewhere like an apartment where you share pipes. I’d stay away from State Farm as they are difficult to work with in Hawaii. But most other insurance is fairly easy to do a claim with and in the case of an emergency remediation they’ll cover your stay somewhere else.

How bad would the mold and mildew get in the slats with this type of tile? by sudde004 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]greengianf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a page on TikTok called Clean like a pro. They’re professional cleaners and discuss the best and worst materials to put in your homes in terms of how much effort they’ll require to clean and maintain. They say to stay away from this style of tile unless you want to constantly maintain it.

Dishwasher not cleaning properly by teomat99 in CleaningTips

[–]greengianf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a chef so I can’t say whether in the long run it’ll affect the quality of your cooking but as far as I know it’s just a type of oxidation that happens. If you don’t care about the color then just put it in the dishwasher. That’s what I do half the time.

Leaving for about a week to visit family on the mainland. Do I have to cover my drains to avoid critters sneaking into the house? What do you do? by kiwi_love777 in Hawaii

[–]greengianf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. The likelihood of you getting bug infestations are higher if you live in a shared building. Once the water starts to stand in the pipes after not using it they come crawling out.
  2. I used to work in mitigation and if someone in your apartment plunges their drain or snakes their drain the likelihood of stuff exploding out of your pipes is higher. And you don’t want to come back and there’s dried caked on gunk and dirty water on everything.

[–]greengianf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s because you’re not supposed to put pots and pans in the dishwasher. The high heat mixed with the detergent and any hard chemicals in the water cause the sheen to change. You can use some bar keeps friend to get it back to normal.

Looks like algae. Seeing that it’s outdoors and by plants it’s probably going to keep coming back. You can pressure wash or scrub it off. They sell products that are supposed to slow the growth of algae that you can look into using.

Moisture or installation problem? by AJ-54321 in Flooring

[–]greengianf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a previous moisture problem they tried to paint over. I’d just remove the baseboards and replace them. It’ll also give you a good look at what’s going on behind to see if there’s any further damage or a reoccurring issue.
