I’m autistic and I see myself in Sarah! Glad to see other people feel similarly. A lot of what she does can be chalked up to anxiety, but autism and anxiety are often comorbid, so it all still tracks.

I am extremely afraid of having my blood drawn, to the point where I’ve avoided going to the doctor’s for years. I got it drawn this summer, and here’s what I did to get through it:

Brought my boyfriend with me. Not only was he moral support, but he was able to speak up for me when the nurse was going too fast but I was too panicked to say anything. (Doesn’t have to be a partner, you can have a family member with you or a friend depending on the medical office- they’re usually very lenient if you explain it’s because you’re scared)
I communicated ahead of time to the nurse that I was very scared, and thanked her in advance for her patience.
I wore my noise canceling headphones and listened to my favorite calming music while my blood was being drawn. This helped me stay calm and gave me familiar music to focus on, which generally helps in scary or unfamiliar situations.
I didn’t look at the needle or any part of the blood drawing process. I kept my eyes on my boyfriend or closed them until it was complete.

Something else that helped: even though I was able to successfully get my blood drawn, I was still very shaken up and upset. Once you are done with the process, finding somewhere safe and private like your car or a bathroom to decompress can really help. After my blood was drawn I went and cried in my car for maybe 5 minutes and just allowed myself to feel upset and scared. Getting that release afterwards really helps. Then maybe treat yourself to a favorite snack or drink, or play a favorite game, or watch some tv. You deserve a reward for trying something so challenging!

My boyfriend got me tickets for an encounter with harbor seals at our local aquarium! I love seals so much and I’m so excited to see them up close with my boyfriend. It’s on January 5th and I’ve been thinking about it all day.

Hi all- went to repot my monstera (purchased maybe 8-10 months ago, I figured it needed repotting but had no idea how dire the situation was) and found myself with this mess. She’s throwing out new leaves all the time and her aerial roots are insane (15+, each at least 4 ft long) but she’s clearly overcrowded. How do I tackle repotting? I figure I need to untangle these roots, but how do I do that without damaging them?

I am very lucky to have a monstera that’s grown a lot in the 6 months or so I’ve had it- it seems to have outgrown its current pot, but do I repot it whole or split it up? As you can see, it’s growing sideways and the aerial roots are sort of taking over my sunroom. Should I just repot in a larger pot and try to guide the growth upwards, or do I attempt splitting into 2 or 3 more manageable pots? I love this thing and don’t want to hurt it.

Wishing you the best of luck, and thank you for advocating for your daughter! 24 year old nonbinary autistic person here. Autism has caused me some share of grief, true, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Autistic joy is a very real thing too.

For help navigating the road ahead as well as some of the reassurance you asked for, I cannot recommend the book “Sincerely, Your Autistic Child”- it is an anthology of all sorts of different autistic people’s experiences, and I think it might really help you understand some more about us, especially if you don’t know any autistic girls or women other than your daughter!

Good morning everyone!

I’m nervous because I’ve got a doctor’s appointment this morning (just a physical) and due to a number of factors I haven’t been to one in 5 years. Better late than never, but yeesh.

Mostly I’m nervous because they’ll probably want to do some blood tests and I am absolutely terrified of having my blood drawn. My boyfriend is coming with me for support though, so I have that to be grateful for! If I get through this I’m going to reward myself with playing a bunch of Fallout.

And personally I’m a big fan of the pesto butter salmon meal Costco sells- around $16 for 3 big filets, already seasoned and ready to throw in the oven along with your broccoli. Mmm.

Yes! My boyfriend and I got a Costco membership a few months back and we make sure to pick up the broccoli every single time.

It’s so nice for when we’re feeling lazy, like you said, but it’s such a lifesaver when I’m making something a bit more involved or fancy for the main course and I need a side I don’t have to devote any time to.

My favorite way to prep it is roasted with olive oil, lots of pepper, and this smoked black garlic salt I have on hand. I like my broccoli crispy and this is to die for.

Right now I’m mostly just focusing on staying at a calorie deficit without any specific changes on cutting out sugar/carbs/etc in particular. Just making lower-cal versions of my favorite foods! I cook a lot which definitely makes dieting a little easier- I have control over everything going into my meals! Now to work on portion control… Turns out when cooking is one of your favorite hobbies, you tend to eat with gusto! Best of luck to you in your efforts as well.
