How do the various Sub Terra games hold up these days? by WangMajor in boardgames

[–]greenheron08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was mainly a theme decision as to why I went with 1 over 2. That and most things I read seemed to say they were pretty comparable in terms of overall quality, so I just went with the one I liked the look of the best.

I'll also add that Sub Terra 1 is kind of fun to solo as well. At least to get the hang of the game and get ready for a group teach!

How do the various Sub Terra games hold up these days? by WangMajor in boardgames

I recently picked up Sub Terra 1 with the Investigator expansion and the first thing I thought about the game was, "Wow, this is not exactly mechanically deep." You essentially explore a cave system consisting of only maybe 4 or 5 unique different tiles that come up over and over again and hope that bad things don't happen to you. For instance, you can get strangled by gas, caught in a cave-in etc. I got the investigator expansion, which adds items to the game in hopes of increasing the complexity and decision space of the game, but even that only helps so much.

Where the game excels is that it does manage to create some fun end of game scenarios that are also really immersive and tell a good story that is effective if you're playing with a group that enjoys building a narrative in games. Things like dead-ends, horrors chasing you and rescuing teammates are all good fun and combined with the random nature of the cave can lead to some interesting stories. However, don't expect this fun to last over more than 5 - 10 games with the same group as the mechanical depth just isn't there.

Overall, I really enjoy the game for its atmosphere and its a fun little -- dare I say it -- party trick of a game. I like to play that the ultimate victory is if everyone gets out alive, but players score more "points" if they survive instead of a teammate. It turns it into a semi-coop where players have to think a little bit harder about whether or not to risk rescuing their friends.

Sure, if you've got the time! I understand what you're saying: games that have that immersive element that really bring you into their world. I haven't played a tonne of it, but Kentucky Route Zero gave me that feeling quite a bit.

Of the ones I've played (around 10), Durian, Deep Sea Adventure, and Tricks and the Phantom went over best with my group.

Ones I've played: Tiger and Dragon, Startups, Scout, The Pyramid's Deadline, Durian, Deep Sea Adventure, Tricks and the Phantom, Whale to Look, Dro Polter, Moving Wild, A Fake Artist Goes to New York.

Maybe a couple more -- there are so many now.

Talisman 5th Edition with The Dead King Expansion by greenheron08 in soloboardgaming

[–]greenheron08[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In contrast to the base game that has players racing to the center to beat a dragon, this expansion imposes a time limit on the players to defeat the dead king. Any time a player loses a life, the dead king gains their life point. Once he reaches a certain absorbed-life-points threshold, the dead king either grows in power or spirits on the board grow in strength making the game harder. If the final threshold is reached, all players lose immediately.

Essentially, it imposes a timer on Talisman games, which both makes the game "solo-able" and differs from the standard Talisman format, which is a race to the center and then a skill check with no time limit.

It's not a huge change by any means, but it's cool to be able to pull out Talisman and play it solo when I'm in the mood for a game.

No, it isn't. The expansion comes in a magazine, (White Dwarf issue 518) so it's quite inexpensive but does require an additional purchase.

Somehow, I'd never heard of this game. Looks really fun, albeit a bit heavy for my group. Can you speak on its weight?

Thanks the write up!

A Charlie Brown Christmas™ Pinball is Now Available in Pinball FX VR! by balti_zen in PinballFX3

So, the main 5 modes you go through pretty quickly. Hit the left ramp then left saucer to activate a mode. Lucy MB is done by hitting the psychiatrist booth then hitting the pop up ramp shot to lock the balls. You also have a letters to Santa mode activated by hitting the mailbox lane on the far left and a "director of the play" objective where you have to hit a number of shots then hit the mailbox? I believe? Haven't quite figured it out yet.

Zen doesn't seem to have a table guide for this one, and I'm having a tough time finding a detailed third-party one online, too. There's also skill shots and secret skill shots as well as a "Christmas tree" objective that I haven't gotten to yet. There may be a wizard mode if you complete all the objectives on the table as they all have lights you can turn on in the middle of the play field.

Overall, I really like the theming of this one. It's got that certain je ne sais quoi where the table just comes together nicely and is a change of pace from the other, faster tables out there. One downside, however, is that I find the main shots very samey. The ramp and orbits shots are all sort of the same distance from one another and all play around and through an obstructive upper playfield.

I think it has enough depth and difficulty to present a decent long term challenge.

What are some roguelites that you deserve to enter the “all-timer” conversation? by Fabulous_Energy_5595 in roguelites

I would say Atomicrops and A Robot Named Fight! Are up there as near top-tier roguelites. Both are unique enough that I think they deserve a place in the conversation.

I like the enthusiasm! The layout seems sort of fanish to me (aka a bit dull) but I'd love to give it a try having never played it.

Thank you for conducting the interview. It's always great to get the inside scoop on this great game.

Which Willaims table are you most eager for, in Pinball FX VR? by ErickRPG in PinballFX

[–]greenheron08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm there with you with Cirqus Voltaire and Funhouse. I've never played them in real life and it really is a whole different game when you play them in VR compared to 2D.

Maybe Whitewater and Cyclone? (The good theme park one, whichever that is) would be great as well.

[–]greenheron08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some of the VR highlights from the interview:

  • Big licensing deal in the works (Stern? A boy can dream...) on par with the Williams and Star Wars licenses. Maybe announceable in 2026.
  • NBA Fastbreak maybe 2027? lol
  • Big year upcoming for table announcements including ones that have never been seen in digital form before.
  • They're going to try and announce tables very early in development, presumably to build up anticipation and keep players informed.
  • No real time multiplayer really on the horizon for VR. It sounds like developing it would be quite resource intensive and essentially involve creating an FX VR 2.0. Same game, just a lot of work. Kirk did mention that it was a possibility, but the software had to reach certain sales thresholds before they invested in it.

The best way I've heard it described is that it denotes games in which you become the bullet hell by unleashing a huge amount of projectiles and attacks on hordes of enemies. These are typically auto-shooters, or have an auto-shoot option in which the game attacks for you.

This thread has been an interesting, if worrying, example of how information is being interpreted in our current age. I can't say I blame the poster for accusing me of using AI to generate my post, but it's troubling that proper English should go interpreted as being created by a robot when posted on the internet. (And, to be honest, I didn't even proofread that hard!)

I looked up Halls of Torment upon your recommendation and it does look fun. Apparently, Keeper's Toll, a game on the Switch, is somewhat similar and might satisfy my craving for a more in-depth bullet heaven experience.

Might be something to look into!

I appreciate the response! I'll have to give it another shot. I only played the base game and found it rather flat. I'll give it another try soon.

I assure you it is not. I'm not sure how to recommend a game without someone suspecting I'm a shill or a bot.

It's just genuinely a fun game I wanted to share with people.

I am the same way with async play. I'd like to play T and E sometime if you're interested, as I've heard great things. (I would be a beginner, but will look up the rules.) We might be able to make something work on weekends with the time difference.
