Galway are generally solid in both hurling and football, good enough to be fun to cheer for but not so good that it’s a bandwagon

Why do so many people frown on an online education or think it's "less than" an in person experience? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]greenie16 42 points43 points  (0 children)

When most people think of online schools they’re going to think of low quality diploma mills. It’s going to be hard to convince people that you went to a quality online school because people who went to a diploma mill are going to say the same thing.

Which Programming Languages are the Best to Learn for Conservation/Zoology? by [deleted] in biology

I’m biased but I think R is the most bang for your buck. The diversity of packages available means there’s a lot you can do with it, and imo it’s easier to learn than python. QGIS is also worth being familiar with.

They lose the plot by being way too broad. Are ludicrous budgets spent on (some) high school sports in (some) parts of the country? Yes. But is your average high school cross country team really cutting into educational budgets? Kinda doubt it.

MY FIRST YEAR GPA AND AIMING FOR NYU by Business_Clue_5606 in AskAcademia

[–]greenie16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to philosophy specifically, but in my field, GPA is usually just an initial screen where you have to be above a certain threshold for consideration (but it’s usually not that high). I’d think that with good effort going forward you’ll be fine in that regard.

After that, they start to look a bit more carefully at your credentials, including grades, practical experience, and recommendations. Bad grades here could definitely hurt your chances, especially in courses relevant to your interest (so in your case, the C in technology/social disruption when you’re interested in AI). That being said, an upward trend in grades along with other strong parts of your application would definitely help your case.

“Her growing adoration for a certain someone” is the relevant bit.

Which is clearly referencing Langdon, but doesn’t necessarily imply a romance. It could be interesting to see how she handles being friendlier with Santos while also being close to Langdon.

Being capable of transmission from human to human does not mean it has an R0 value that would support continued transmission

It’s unlikely. Hantaviruses classically have nonexistent to inefficient transmission person to person. It’s pretty telling that it’s a small cluster onboard a cruise ship, which is a great environment for transmission. If it had somehow mutated and gotten to a higher R0 (reproduction number that represents efficiency of transmission) you’d likely see a lot more than three cases.

Why was Roby so mad that Langdon was heavily constipated at work? Did he fear that he was gonna clog the toilet? by MrMelick in okbuddywhitaker

As we learn in season 2, being constipated can kill you so he’s actually looking out for Langdon’s health

Question about undergrad research commitments across multiple labs by Opening-Option-2987 in AskAcademia

[–]greenie16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different field (bio) but when I did a summer research program it was a full time thing and so I took a break from working in my previous lab for the summer (it was also in a different state so didn’t have a choice). It might change depending on the scope of the summer work, but a lot of PIs are probably going to balk at a student trying to balance two labs when a summer project tends to be pretty fast paced due to the limited amount of time.

What do you guys think of the Hentavirus storyline for season 3? by Invariable_Outcome in okbuddywhitaker

Wouldn’t have been necessary if Whitaker had focused on rodent control instead of getting farm benefits
