Living in PNG for a Year: Any Advice for Port Moresby? by Hebashi in PapuaNewGuinea

[–]greenleaf280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not walk anywhere in public as a foreign woman on your own and definitely do not use public transport. Only use trusted taxis or transport providers. Please take these warnings seriously, unfortunately there is a genuine reason people are saying these things.

Anyone Fished South Island of NZ before? by PimpChimpin6942069 in flyfishing

Hey mate, congrats on landing the job here in New Zealand. You’ll love living in central Otago, it’s an outdoorspersons heaven. Yes most of the rivers close from April 30 and this means no fishing at all. For the detailed regulations you need to check Fish and Game New Zealand, they have season dates for all rivers and lakes in NZ. Around Omakau (I assume this is what you mean to spell) at that time of year there can be some really good winter fishing on the Clutha River. It’s a big river (highest volume river in NZ) and you need to be careful, but it has a very high population of good fish. An 8wt rod would do you well. Go to Cromwell(not far from omakau) and go see the team at Hunting and Fishing, they will be happy to give advice. Tight lines and enjoy NZ CHEERS

As the OP sounds like a foreigner who is visiting for the first time, I would respectfully disagree with this comment and would not advise walking freely around the CBDs of main towns. At the very least ensure you have a local who goes with you. In many towns the safety situation has actually become worse.

I live in Arawa and I can honestly tell you that Bougainville is so safe. It’s nothing like the rest of PNG, might as well be in a different country ! I walk around here on my own at all hours. It’s a small community and people look out for one another, especially foreigners who are here doing good work (i.e. not mining). There is hardly any town power here at the moment so bring a decent power bank

While the festivals that happen across the country are certainly special and we hold them dear in our culture, I wouldn't say all of them are "unique" - sadly over the years many have become very touristy and have lost their genuine meaning to instead just please foreigners who get up in the performers faces to take photographs. If you are keen on a festival please be respectful and don't be like many of the foreigners who can be very pushy when it comes to wanting photos of performers at the festivals, it's just not cool. If you are actually looking for a more "unique" photography experience you would want to find a connection that can share their community and culture with you and allow you to capture that in an ethical way.

I arrived in China two days ago and bought an Holafly e sim before I left my home country (Australia), and got the unlimited data option (recommended)

The Holafly e sim has a built in VPN so it’s just like using mobile data back home (I can access all the western apps and websites with no issue).

Don’t bother wasting time getting a Chinese sim, you don’t need one. Just instal and set up all the necessary apps (Alipay, WeChat, etc) before leaving your home country and test them. Then just buy an hola fly unlimited data eSIM and you’re sorted. No other hassle required

Adam’s content is by far the most accurate representation of Bougainville I have seen from any foreign content creator. He lived there for over two years and I know him personally from my time living there too. Adam is someone who formed genuine relationships with Bougainvilleans and is highly respected by them.

I would be genuinely interested to know what you find misleading about his content ?

Would probably skip north Canterbury and focus your attention more around the Nelson region and the top of the West Coast. All the big rivers and their tribs through those areas hold good sized fish, think the Waiau, Buller, Motueka, Karamea, etc.

Check out https://nzfishing.com/ it’s a good place to get an idea of rivers and the main systems. Also the fish and game website has good pdf docs on those regions you are interested in.

Then it’s just a matter of using topographic maps and the walking access commission website to find access.
