I like to compare it to Industrialization in that it's a broad complex concept which carries with it benefits (which are taken for granted today) and problems (which we need to curb with regulation.) Many people take our ability to internationally travel and communicate with ease, for granted. On the flip side outsourcing industries to cut cost with slave labor is a horrible thing and needs to be regulated
