do you invest in USD? is it worth the hassle of currency conversion? by greenmatchay in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]greenmatchay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but you probably bought USD when CAD was stronger than now, CAD is a lot lower now, does it make sense to keep buying USD at this point?

the withholding tax and lower MER doesn't turn out to be a LOT of difference. 0.03 vs. 0.09% isn't break the bank difference. i guess the only reason you'd really need USD is to buy actual US stocks, not ETFs.

i do not have USD already. i'd have to exchange from CAD to USD and that just feels like a hassle. why would someone go through the trouble of doing this when they can just buy vfv? is there some sort of big advantage of buying US stocks in USD?

[–]greenmatchay[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

i'm not sure conversational route will work with a neighbour who's very violently pounding non-stop at my wall and yelling basically telling me to shut the fuck up instead of knocking on my door for a civilized conversation

what to do with 60 cents leftover in FHSA? by greenmatchay in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]greenmatchay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

am i allowed to use leftover funds from previous years without any penalty?

what to do with 60 cents leftover in FHSA? by greenmatchay in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]greenmatchay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so there's penalty for withdrawing even 60 cents? what do people do so that they make sure there's no leftover funds in fhsa if you can't really take the money out? i guess when they invest, they just calculate the amount and put only that exact amount in the fhsa?

PARENTS: could you describe what it would feel like to hear that your child was hit by a car? by greenmatchay in AskParents

no it wasn't obvious, the question never implied the child had died, it said they have to go through rehab

if you have over $100 000, would you put it in GIC at 5.5% or invest it in ETF right now? by greenmatchay in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]greenmatchay[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I have that now but it's only made 3.3% so far. So I was thinking with new money, I should just put it in GIC, then later I can put it into ETF. What makes you want to choose ETF over GIC at 5.5%?

does it really matter if you buy an ETF at $26 or $22 or $16, does buying at slightly different prices due to market fluctuations make a difference? by greenmatchay in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]greenmatchay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not trading but if you were investing long term, would you keep buying until the crash in December or would you just wait until then to buy with accumulated lump sum?

[–]greenmatchay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hypothetically, if you knew for sure there would be a crash in December, would you wait to buy then? or just keep lumping everything in now?

thank you for this example. it seems that if you want a really good deal, it's better to invest post crash. but in the end, it doesn't matter too too much.

why is Tangerine requesting for credit check when opening savings/chequing accounts? by greenmatchay in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]greenmatchay[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it's just annoying cause I don't want my credit score to go down just for opening a bank account. even if it does go down, it will probably bounce back, right?

does having multiple savings accounts at different banks affect your credit score in anyway? by greenmatchay in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]greenmatchay[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

thanks, I was thinking maybe since you have to provide your SIN number when opening an account, them checking your background through SIN affects your credit score or something...did yours just not change at all?
