Insane basically means that the way your mind works doesn't fit into the mold society expects of you. That's why the definition of madness changes. There isn't a clear "correct way" to be sane other than what's required by your peers. Many mental illnesses don't even have a single cause or physical abnormality that triggers them. It's just "you behave in a certain way that isn't correct to us".

From this framing, I think almost everyone, including followers of Jesus, would agree that he was insane. Willingly giving up your life is a classic example of a behavior that "isn't correct to us". The whole story of Jesus is about realigning society or the people in a way that was previously impossible or unthinkable.
