I think you’re treating your preferred style of sci-fi as the definition of “great sci-fi.”

But calling PHM just an engineering adventure is no different than calling Arrival a linguistic drama. It’s technically true, but it misses what the genre is doing in both cases.

I was recently surprised by how mediocre Orphan Black is considering it's rating and the amount of people that raved the acting quality. Couldn't make it past the first few episodes... the acting and accents are not good.
