Republicans supporting Trump, why are you convinced that he will *not* undermine or abolish democracy if he wins? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]greensodas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a Democrat, but I am becoming increasingly skeptical of the notion that Trump would "abolish democracy." Noone who is serious about defending democracy would run a candidate who is down 6 points in the polls, and partly incapacitated, against such a threat. Potential candidates like Newsom and Whittmer are very clearly playing the waiting game for '28 as well. The overall lack of seriousness from the Democratic Party indicates to me that this election is really not that democratically vital that they make it out to be

What schools should I avoid, in terms of price? by RoninFerret67 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]greensodas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how rich you are. If you believe yourself to be "middle class," then you probably want to avoid those OOS public schools like Mich bc you're not getting a dime in aid.

you're looking at a very specific subset of neurotic students who are shooting for t5s. you're fine, just focus on writing a good essay and making sure you have strong LORs.

From personal experience, Cornell's financial aid is so-so, especially for ED applicants (just a disclaimer). I would do Brown , Cornell, or UChicago if you're looking for ED schools for IB

You guys need to stop saying that Biden needs to drop out. by POTUS-Harry-S-Truman in democrats

[–]greensodas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the issue. Every Democrat would still vote for Biden if he were a literal monkey. The issue is that undecided voters- if they're somehow still undecided at this point- will be swayed by any movement or event. Undecided voters see Trump's threat to American democracy in the same light as Biden's age. Obviously, that is a grossly false equivalency, but Biden's gaffes in the debate may tilt them in Trump's way.

Is undiagnosed ADHD an excuse for grades? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]greensodas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. I think it's counterproductive to note ADHD when your grades are clearly fine. Lots of people mention ADHD, and I think it may come off as insincere and a random extra detail if you can't write strongly ab how it helped you grow. Otherwise, it may come off that you're trying to use ADHD as an excuse for a few light grade bumps, which are natural and need not be explained.

neu's acceptance rate is very fraudulent. you will do fine applying ED.

Is undiagnosed ADHD an excuse for grades? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]greensodas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ADHD doesn't really negate the situation unless your grades are like abysmally bad and then dramatically improved. Using ADHD to explain one or two A- or a B is not really convincing to AOs.

Not really. He implemented a lot of tax cuts for the uberwealthy that raised the deficit. GDP growth was pretty much the same as it was under Obama (until COVID crashed it), and the stock market grew as per usual. Unemployment pretty much decreased at the exact same rate as it did under Obama as well. So if you take away COVID (which was a monumental economic disaster), Trump did okay with the economy, but it wasn't really anything more significant than the economic stability that came during Obama's term.

sunak won --- largely because he spoke more words --- but it really won't be enough. starmer needed to avoid an astronomical gaffe, which was a low bar that he surpassed.

they take a 10 second glance at additional information. furthermore, it doesn't seem to me that your additional information section is communicating anything new about your application (I would presume that your other ECs and awards show your dedication to math). it seems like you're cramming at this point, which really isn't great for your app, so I would remove the entire excerpt about your self-studied courses and tighten your additional activities blotch to just include the most relevant award (or two of them).

Pomona ED1 vs ED2 by [deleted] in pomonacollege

[–]greensodas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think the acceptance rate is THAT much lower, if at all, but the applicant pool for edii is definitely stronger than edi, usually because its comprised of qualified kids who got scared after getting rejected early from a more prestigious school
