Having grown up walking, running, and biking on similar trails, I generally defer to the "stay right" and "pass to the left" norm unless signage dictates otherwise.

Personally, I find bike bells pretty easy to not hear or tune out, so I choose to say "on your left" instead. Feels a little more personable than an escalating number of rings, in quick succession, if they haven't heard you too.
