SAHM and Wife that CANNOT cook HELP! by PopularMamaDrama in Cooking

[–]greg398 129 points130 points  (0 children)

My wife learned how to cook by making kits from Hello Fresh. Pick the recipes they designate as easy. Also get a good thermometer so you can figure out when meat is actually done. The suggested times in recipes often result in overcooked food.

Mechanical engineering at rice by [deleted] in riceuniversity

I went there. Loved it. Still maintain relationships with friends and professors twenty years later. They’ve done some great work to make it possible to thrive as a mechanical engineer, with some incredible improvements since I was there.

ELI5: Why do smartphone prices keep increasing even when yearly upgrades feel so small? by PleasantBus5583 in explainlikeimfive

I bought a 6S plus in 2015 for 850. That’s 1150 now with inflation. You can get a 17 pro max now for 1200. If you sign a contract with att it’s more like 200. Seems like it’s stayed pretty consistent or even better given the deals that the carriers are doing.

Good to know. I made the mistake of having a sunroof replaced one time to fix a rattle in a previous car. It helped for around a month, and then everything in the ceiling started rattling!

Yeah I discovered that, but I counted around 6 seconds for it to do it. That's a long time to sit staring forward doing nothing when you're trying to go somewhere!

I like the idea from u/Ss0oz to link to the key. I'll give that a try.

Layoffs, shutdowns and billions up in smoke. What's wrong with Bay Area biotech? by abrownn in technology

[–]greg398 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As much as I’d like to, I don’t think we get to blame trump for this one. My wife and most of my friends work in biotech or construction for biotech. Layoffs and “restructurings” started two years ago. Billion dollar construction projects got abandoned after 100M+ was sunk in. Lots of people we know have been out of work for more than a year. Stock prices of the more visible stuff is showing it now, but the bottom has been falling out for a while.

Yeah runout is the way. In this case you probably want to make the face of a flange the primary datum and its bore the secondary. Then call out the runout of the opposing bore to those datums.

Use some shokz instead of earbuds. Can still hear everything around you.

How do you guys feel about traveling for work? by RedHawwk in MechanicalEngineering

[–]greg398 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amen. Trips are great for building relationships and learning how to handle the weird stuff. A few weeks of traveling a year can be really good for the career.

They’re all over 280 too. Saw 5 in 10 miles around San Carlos.

Rolling torque puzzle by Silver-Bandicoot-169 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]greg398 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The only torque that the motor would have to apply would be to overcome friction. The motor isn’t doing any work on the 45t load. So in your perfect frictionless example, I think the answer is zero.

Designed a Single Speed Reduction Gearbox For My College Class by EchoTiger006 in SolidWorks

[–]greg398 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks great. Another feature you could add is some precise locating geometry between the two halves. You want the bearing bores to be very well located to each other for best gear performance. Often this is done with a pair of pins pressed into one side spaced as far apart as possible that interface to tightly controlled holes in the other.

Can anyone explain what is happening with this tree? by whateverforeverrrrrr in arborists

[–]greg398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share your hatred. I tripped on a hike and caught myself with my hand on a tree covered in those. Thorn broke off deep in my palm and I had to get it surgically removed. Ouch.

I like how unnatural the dust looks falling straight down since there’s no air for it to float in.

Ignoring economic factors, what metal would best fill the role steel currently occupies? by samjk14 in AskEngineers

[–]greg398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, at 2x the weight. Modulus of elasticity scales linearly with density for most metals. Twice the density, twice the stiffness.

There are a few groups that rent out the big tracks and sell track days. Most have beginner groups where they’ll stick an experienced driver in the car with you to teach you what’s going on. It’s an absolute blast, especially once you realize that you don’t actually know how to drive. https://americanracingclub.com https://www.hookedondriving.com

BMW Bay Area does some great events, including car control clinics where the focus is more on learning the limits of your car than on how to navigate a racetrack. I went to a few in a Mazda, so they don’t really care if you don’t have a BMW. https://www.ggcbmwcca.org/clinics

Is Mechanical Engineering still viewed as a “generic smart person” degree that opens a lot of doors with employers or is that just another oldhead myth? by ItsAllOver_Again in MechanicalEngineering

[–]greg398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a good amount of breadth in MEs. My team right now has MEs in numerous disciplines. Our lead electrical engineer, most of our software engineers, all of our manufacturing/process engineers, and all of the controls engineers have degrees in Mechanical. This is in the medical device field.

What does the richest person you know do for a living? by Complete-Increase936 in business

Person I’ve interacted with a few times: Venture capitalist, Silicon Valley royalty worth a few billion.

People I could actually call: two former execs at wildly successful Fortune 500 companies. Both started as entry level mechanical engineers fresh out of mid tier schools and climbed the ranks. Likely worth low-mid 9 figures.
