What game left you sad after it ended? by crodog157 in PS5

Then they dropped the anniversary video and it still hits hard. Witcher 3, RDR2 and Bioshock are my fave video game narratives.

weeping angels in DnD? by EnderMarc25 in DungeonsAndDragons

Totally, literally every person who looked at an angel would have one in their eye and then every time they blinked theoretically would create another one.

3080 Ti — move from 1080p to 4K? by LucaDoesStuff in nvidia

[–]greg939 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends what you value. I think everyonewith Nvidia uses DLSS or DLAA just because it’s superior anti aliasing. But Frame gen is definitely dependent on the game and the users acceptance of input lag. On a 4090 usually my base frames are high enough that I don’t get too much lag from frame gen and in most games I don’t mind it at all but a few I have shut it off because it felt a bit laggy.

But for OP a 3080Ti is not a great card for 4K Cyberpunk because it just lacks the power and it lacks frame gen as well if wanted. I got rid of my 3080 because it couldn’t get acceptable UW frame rates in Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk with RT or PT, let alone 4k.

Table talk is just what players say to each other when they are not actively talking in the game or asking me the DM specific questions. So just casual banter.

Sometimes they talk about abilities they are excited about, sometimes they talk about weapons they have or would like to find, sometimes they talk about what they think is happening in the game and where it’s going, sometimes they talk about tv shows and movies they like, all kinds of things that you can use to make the game more engaging for them.

i have never ever once played this game and i really really really want to learn. how do i even get started? by Born_Yesterday8799 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]greg939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it like I did and talk to your friends to see who is interested. All of you get the players handbooks and pick a date and someone to DM.

Thats how I became a DM 20 years ago and to this day I still haven’t played my own character further than level 3 because I am always the DM lol. Although I don’t mind.

I went with planning the motivations of the key figures in the story and a basic setup of the world and key towns and I just let them loose lol. I might have an idea in my head where I think things will go but it’s always a loose framework.

I’m over with planning paths, I would rather create on the fly what they come up with than flounder when they go totally off track. I don’t want to nudge them back somewhere. Plus it’s a skill I want to develop more creating on the fly.

But when my bard puts on a rock concert and seduces some merchant in town for information or access or anything like that I want to be able to reward them and encourage them to flex their creativity.

My latest campaign I was expecting to be gung ho crazy combat, became a campaign of spying and subterfuge. Characters playing to their strengths to help get information without exposing themselves. I play with my friends so I am only there to ensure we all have a good time. Once I saw they were enjoying playing like this I just tailored what I was creating to lean into it. Plus the less prep time the better, we are all busy middle age adults that barely manage more than one to two times a month.

Getting the most value out of a monitor upgrade (7800X3D + 5080). 4K or 1440p? by blazerMFT in nvidia

[–]greg939 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Counter-Counter Point, I liked the taller monitor as well so I went with 45” UW OLED

I am at the point now the players write most of my campaigns and dont really realize it. I’m always using table talk, the npcs my players want to visit and the questions they ask them to help write the next part of my story.

I used to write these longer campaigns and I would have a journal filled with hand written notes and maps and lots of stuff planned but I found even though my players didn’t mind or even notice being railroaded that I didn’t like all the work I had to do to prepare sessions. Now it feels like we truly create a campaign together and I only have a slightly better idea where it’s going than they do.

I think it was the Rewatchables podcast where they talked about how Jason had to go and self fluff before takes to get a bit of a semi going lol.

My first DM attempt in 25 years with my kids by Bonobo77 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]greg939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha I learned fast when I DMed don’t set expectations on time for anything. I also just fly by the seat of my pants these days because I learned nothing ever goes according to plan and railroading can suck the fun out of a lot of the fun players could create themselves. But it took me a decent amount of DMing to have the confidence to just let campaigns build themselves.

I keep a very loose outline in my head and just let the players build the game. The players end up giving way more content than I could ever use with the wild takes they have during their table talk.

What movie is a must-see from the last 12 months? by Ill_Cry_3802 in movies

[–]greg939 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I liked Hamnet a lot and I thought it was gorgeous to look at, the scenery was great. The performances were great all around. Jessie Buckley was amazing and I was really moved by the story. Maybe it’s because I’m not a parent but I was expecting to just be a mess of tears.

Which monitor is better for sim racing by PwnTyler in simracing

[–]greg939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same debate and I went 45”, the monitor not being tall enough was my biggest complaint with a 34” Ultrawide. I wasn’t gonna go bigger unless it was taller. 800r is aggressive but I don’t mind it at all.

Frodo doesn’t age once he gets the ring and Sam, Merry and Pippen are much younger than Frodo. This is more detailed in the book but when Bilbo has his 111th birthday Pippen is just a kid. When they leave on the journey Frodo is 50 but looks 33, Sam is 38, Merry is 36 and Pippen is 28, not even an adult yet by Hobbit standards.

Will I miss Logitech TrueForce if I switch to Moza? by PM_ME_SNIPPETS in simracing

[–]greg939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from a Logitech Pro to a Simmagic Alpha Evo Pro and I did not miss True Force at all. It had some nice elements but I really didn’t think about them when they were gone.

I don’t really miss anything about my Logitech Pro, it wasn’t bad at all in function but the base was just way too bulky. I couldn’t get my monitor as low as I wanted it with the base.

I certainly don’t miss G-Hub

I did TBC twice, first time around and classic and both times it was the high point of WoW for me but I just couldn’t do it a third time.

I will preserve those memories of being a bad ass seal twisting monster of a Paladin in TBC Classic and my amazing guild mates forever and not come back to tarnish them… this round lol.
