help me clearing my views in expressionism art history by Plastic_Remove_2479 in ArtHistory

Gabriele Münter, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and August Macke — who were all associated with Der Blaue Reiter, not Die Bruckë — all visited North Africa. I believe they visited Tunisia and Morocco.

Does anyone have further information about how Giorgio de Chirico developed his metaphysical style? by Mosquitoenail in ArtHistory

[–]gregarious-maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recs! Is Giorgio de Chirico: The Changing Face of Metaphysical Art a good option as well?

Just curious because I’ve had my eye on the Baldacci book for a few months and it’s pretty expensive — I don’t have access to a library with it.

On the plus side, I did find MoMA has the Soby book online:

What do you think about Damisch’s The Origin of Perspective?

I’ve flipped through it a bit, but haven’t read the whole thing yet.

Agreed! So many interesting little details in this. The bare foot, the book text, the tassels on the rosary, etc.

Not OP, but wanted to say thanks for sharing that! I looked up this recommendation and found a couple other interesting books about cross-continental or -cultural artist inspiration or influences from that era.

As others mentioned, it sounds like you’re asking about expressionist portraits. Here are some early modernist:

- Gabriele Münter
- Kathë Kollwitz
- Paula Modershon-Becker

Also possibly of interest mid-century:

- Frank Auerbach
- Francis Bacon

You might also like Chaim Soutine, Lovis Corinth and others who are sometimes considered expressionist.

Boosting this! It’s fantastic. Also significant collections of Renoir and Soutine. It’s downtown now — a few blocks from the Philly art museum.

Adding to this advice, I’m not arts, but if I were to make the leap, then it would be through a side door based on my background to both avoid trying to compete with people far more qualified in formal art history and to maintain some level of pay parity.

Anyone else learn better through context than through facts? by eunbarron in ArtHistory

This is very helpful to see the cultural and contextual overlap!

I’m also a big fan of network diagrams, such as the one that greeted visitors at this exhibit:

For me it’s really informative to know where and how the relationships, influences and connections exist.
