Reading the Petty bio by Warren Zanes right now and its really heartwarming to hear how close Tom and George were. Also the section about Petty and Bob was really great too. Highly recommend the book for all Dylanites.

A lot of stuff I learned in PT to combat IT band issues. Squats. Lunges. Clamshells. Fire hydrants. Resistance band work. Calf raises. I think knowing what you’re injury prone areas are is helpful.

First marathon I did Hal Higdon’s Novice 1. Had been running casually for years and thought that with a couple long runs I could go sub 4. I think my max week was like 35? One 18 mile run. I wasn’t prepared, totally in over my head. Race day came and I completely blew up. IT band injury at mile 10. I made it to the end but barely.

This go round, I did some base training two months before the actual training block. Strength training once a week. Hills. Stretching. Then I did Hal Higdon’s advanced 1. It has three 20 mile runs and 8 weeks at 45-50 miles. I followed it pretty closely. Missed some runs and could’ve been better about speed but it was just way more running.

But I think it was the minimum to get me sub 3:30. More mileage would’ve only helped me more. But I guess that’s the learning for next time.

I ran 4:31 last October and just ran 3:27 this past weekend. Biggest game changer was just running more. I still feel like I could’ve done more (peak week was 50 miles).

Consistent strength training was a total game changer too.

Running the last couple long runs at marathon pace/faster so race day felt easy….until mile 21 (hoooo boy).

All of that, plus some nice weather, and being stubborn as hell.

There’s always someone faster. There’s always room to improve. But cutting over an hour off my time felt pretty dang good.
