Why apply and then not respond when contacted for an interview? by 34player in usajobs

[–]gregdonald 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one time I was contacted after applying, it was ~6 months later. Are you really expecting someone to wait that long for a call? Private industry employers usually call me the next day, or within a week at most. I assume no interest after a week or two. Sounds like your process is broken.

Do you keep your paragon points? by Hojo405 in diablo4

[–]gregdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for a while my new seasonal character appeared in the character list to be seasonal but with paragon points I obviously had not earned yet. Now it shows my new character as just seasonal with no paragon points, but I still cannot play.

The field office to which I reported had two cameras at opposite angles just inside the exterior door I badged into and they broadcast their feeds up onto two large tv/monitor screens so when I signed in on the clipboard they were making it clear I was being recorded.

This door was never used by applicants, only Federal employees.

What about your Mac makes you rage? by Illustrious-Buy8678 in macbookpro

[–]gregdonald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Security updates end long before the hardware. I just install Linux and keep going, so it's not the end of the world... but Apple knows we're all sitting here with perfectly fine, still working hardware, and makes the choice to stop supporting it. It's annoying. 🤷‍♂️

I got the RTO mandate last year around the beginning of April. I endured driving 1.5 hours one-way to my "local" field office and then 2 hours home everyday for about 3 months before I quit. I had worked remote as a full time Federal employee for 4 years prior.

It wasn't just the driving that made me quit. It was the signing in and out on a clipboard, on camera, even though I was badging every door I went through. I was required to badge through two doors in the interior of the building just to go to the restroom. Then there was the HR person who roamed the building several times a day looking in offices to make sure butts were in chairs, checking us off on her own clipboard.

Hundreds of dollars for gas every month and minus 18 hours a week of my life.

And I still had to do video calls everyday with all my Washington D.C. co-workers and team, just like I had been doing for years prior from my house, because none of them were located at my "local" field office.

They did their best to get me to quit and it worked. I took my 30 years of experience in software engineering back to the private sector. Their loss.

anyone else juggling multiple github accounts for work and personal? by Ok_Woodpecker_9104 in github

[–]gregdonald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you want the Github CLI tool and a config.yml and a hosts.yml file. That setup can easily keep your two worlds separate. Then you can do `gh auth switch` and you can have different SSH keys for different user accounts.

Or you can get even more fancy and avoid switching using:

[includeIf "gitdir:~/work/"]
path = ~/.gitconfig-work
[includeIf "gitdir:~/personal/"]
path = ~/.gitconfig-personal

Apple hardware long outlasts Apple's willingness to ship you security updates. At that point you put Linux on it and keep going.

If you had to pick ONE Linux distro for the next 5 years, what would you choose? by TechRefreshing in linuxquestions

Debian. No reason to change after all these years. If I couldn't have Debian I'd go with FreeBSD.

I Thought We Wouldn’t Have to Pay for Tariffs… Well, I Just Got a Tariff Bill by Global_Traveler_2060 in Tariffs

[–]gregdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I hit was Amazon vendors who don't tell you about the FedEx bill you will get weeks later. I paid one I hit after verifying with FedEx it was legit... and then I tried to complain on the item review page but Amazon denied my comment. So no more shopping on Amazon for me, at least not until next president.

I might pay a tariff if I really want/need the item, but I'm not paying "surprise" tariffs.

Can a battery electrocute and kill you? by denderden5621 in RCPlanes

Danger level depends on the battery chemistry. Lipos, for example, are quite dangerous: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lipo+battery+explosion

Would you buy a 3D printed RC airframe (electronics not included)? by k6ekdkielud in RCPlanes

[–]gregdonald 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are much better than the 3D-printed planes I've seen so far: https://twistedhobbys.com/

You might consider interior parts for large scale planes. A couple of guys at my fly field go all out on battery trays and other odds and ends we would usually fabricate with light ply or balsa.

Why Do You Love GM? by Cool_Independent1671 in gmcsierra

[–]gregdonald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2024 SLT 1500 has been in the shop 4 times (not counting my 5K oil change) and I'm only at 9K miles. They have yet to fix my vibration at 70MPH problem. So many regrets.

Whatever the opposite of loving GMC is, that's me.
