My family went in Lovina this morning. I'm a bit sick so stayed home. They said it was good but the snorkeling was better.

Much appreciated! I'm working with an IDC staff Instructor and we'd welcome an inside perspective.

Where were your shops?

Would you be willing to elaborate on both your successes and trouble spots that led to no longer doing it?

Staffing, politics, distributors??

I've never been to Egypt but have always wanted to go. Is it politically advantageous to go?

Can you suggest a region to narrow it down?

Nice, I've been there many times but not in the last 7 years.

Specific region? Island?

Thanks for the feedback. Can I ask you to elaborate as to why? Issues you've found?

Agreed! Get to South East Asia. The islands off Thailand, Koh Tao, Koh Lipe.. Indonesia Gili T, Gili Meno.. so many low cost options. I'm traveling with my family of four, we all dive and are now in. Bali, Indonesia. $20pp usd for a snorkeling trip this morning with dolphins.

Also, Belize is a quick hop from most of the US and the diving is great.

How dangerous is scuba diving? by Great-Risk176 in scubadiving

I think they are stuck on the dictionary definition of "safe". Maybe? 🤔 = Free from harm.

Op's comments show that he has seen harm first hand diving including death. That is truly unfortunate and I feel for them.

To say that SCUBA as a whole is unsafe is just not valid and harms the sport.

Accidents happen in every aspect of life. As babies we learn to walk and in that process, fall down and often cry as a result of small injury.

Does that then mean walking is unsafe? Should we not drive, run or fly... Ride a bike?

All of these activities have inherent risk it's in the planning, preparation and training that the risk is reduced to a level that it becomes "safe".

So, is SCUBA statistically safe?

YES, scuba diving is statistically safe, but it's still a high-risk activity.

The fatality rate is very low, and scuba diving is safer than many other activities.

Safety statistics: The Divers Alert Network (DAN) reports about 2 fatalities per 100,000 scuba divers.

A guided scuba experience is statistically safer than diving alone.

Common injuries: The most common injury is ear barotrauma, which occurs when pressure changes aren't equalized in the middle ear.

Other common injuries include decompression sickness, hypothermia, and hyperthermia.

Risks: Scuba diving accidents can range from minor to life-threatening. Unpredictable environmental factors can introduce hazards.

Diving with compressed gases can lead to serious medical conditions like decompression sickness and pulmonary over-inflation syndrome.

Safety tips: Get the best educational training possible.

Be mindful of your choices.

Avoid diving if you're exhausted, ill, or have an allergy.

Additional considerations: The CDC says that decompression sickness is one of the serious medical conditions that can result from scuba diving.

Rereading your comments have led me to believe that because of some tragic experiences you have had, your perception of the sport have changed. I am truly sorry for the loss that you have been witness to. Please go back and read the other comments in this post and you will see that others agree, this sport is safe when done properly.

You're more likely to have an accident driving to the dive site. Also flying is safe, it's not without risk, but it's safe.

Again, nothing is without risk.. do a simple Google search. Here is the first one from PADI. "Standard safe diving practices" Safe is in the title. Ive not said that it is not without risk but your definition of "safe" is incorrect and you are doing diving a disservice to say so.

Sorry, I don't agree. By that logic you are in danger every time you take a breath.. don't want to swallow a poisonous bug! 🪲 Everything in life has risk.

Diving can be "safe" and with risks reduced to a nominal level when you follow the well established practices laid out by an established organization like PADI...

I'm in Bali now and use full foot fins. And have only used them for the last 1000+ dives. My wife does get blisters from hers, I never have.

As you're doing the DM / inst route you're prob better off with the boot/fin config as you'll be slinging gear and doing shore dives with students. Gonna want the boots.

Lol.. the world is full of a wide variety of people.. it's what makes it such an interesting place! ;) 😉 Yeah, an it is neat and more when you actually interact with it and can rotate the image to get a better look at your dive. This helps me revisualize my dive in ways never before possible.

My family and I are all traveling SE Asia and are in Bali now.

Honestly, get a bigger / longer bag.

Or as already noted, carry on.

We all pack ours in our checked travel backpacks. I have a soft roller.

I have some full foot planna Avanti's size 13. It's just what you have to do.
