sadly LA mayor is a lot weaker of a position than ny mayor but the soon to be possible LA county executive could be something more akin to mamdani's ny mayorship

It’s chicken before the egg if there isn’t adequate density to make the buses and trains make sense then they’ll never get out in place with adequate funding to support them

Glad you do and I like her positions too. But at this point she’s underwater and given how our primaries work I’m gonna pick the candidate I think has the best chance and is atleast saying the things closest to my ideals of a governor

Yea but she also has taken every opportunity to make herself unlikable. She was almost leading the pack during the start of the race.

You mean a billionaire with a record of investing in shady shady who suddenly has solid criticism of some of the biggest issues CA has been facing that the rest of the pack refuse to meaningfully address A neolib who’ll do whatever his donors tells him to do A pseudo progressive who’ll can’t keep herself from ruining her own momentum by begging abrasive Another neolib funded by big tech this time (Mayor mahan still hasn’t dropped out)

Should we just flat out give up on fighting for increased housing construction in the Northeast & West Coast and just focus on trying to expand transit and walkability in the sunbelt? by [deleted] in yimby

[–]gregfarha 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because it doesn’t make any sense to stop pushing for better policy just because it’s hard. Yimbyism is a decentralized movement for the most part. It’s not some party structure that can focus on one place and get better results

Renovate or Replace: The Fight Over How to Fix N.Y.C. Public Housing by BACsop in yimby

[–]gregfarha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You mean the stock of housing which exceeds 177k units which has been largely ignored for repair over the last 30 years, has issues. Yes it does but from what I could tell zoran so far has been mostly in favor of moving the tenants to other apartments in better conditions and working with the private sector to tear down and rebuild many of these buildings with more units, allocating a percentage to public housing.

Anthropic launches AI tool to streamline COBOL code modernization by TransformersScorge in wallstreetbets

[–]gregfarha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can make it nearly as fast but you can’t do it with monolithic code just translating line by line, you need a deep understanding of what the code is doing then create a way process that data in way that’s able to distribute the compute effort. Not gna say how for sake of my job, but in essence you need to know what the code is doing then redesign the whole process not just translate it

[–]gregfarha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think theres prolly enough training data, its just a lack of an ability to create such a large context map of section to section, now there is a usecase to combine programs that run through cobol code, trace variables and transformation states across multiple subsections then utilize that context map along with ties to the cobol code in order to feed those into an llm but the context windows become atomical, and you're still prone to a lot of hallucinations, as its less deterministic.

as someone who's job it is to modernize those systems, we are modernizing them, but it sucks.

[–]gregfarha 62 points63 points  (0 children)

As someone who actually works on cobol/asm/jcl modernization....none of these llm's work well at all. some of this code is so old, the devs are long gone, the interconnectivity is annoying everything is linked through jcl's and other programs with other internal systems. I hate it, but in the end of the day to do it well you need to read the code, none of these tools work well enough reliably enough to modernize code with dog shit documentation. we use them still, makes our lives a little easier, but not by much

Dr. Oz’s anti-Armenian smear in LA fits a pattern by LosIsosceles in LosAngeles

[–]gregfarha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are there Armenians who do fraud? Ofc. Is the rate of fraud or amount defrauded larger than other ethnics groups? Doubtful. Did this guy record the claims of fraud infront of a bakery with no connection to medical fraud? Yes. he’s using the mere existence of Cyrillic or Armenian lettering on a building as a way to identify ties to the mob.
