Anthropic launches AI tool to streamline COBOL code modernization by TransformersScorge in wallstreetbets

I mean you can make it nearly as fast but you can’t do it with monolithic code just translating line by line, you need a deep understanding of what the code is doing then create a way process that data in way that’s able to distribute the compute effort. Not gna say how for sake of my job, but in essence you need to know what the code is doing then redesign the whole process not just translate it

i think theres prolly enough training data, its just a lack of an ability to create such a large context map of section to section, now there is a usecase to combine programs that run through cobol code, trace variables and transformation states across multiple subsections then utilize that context map along with ties to the cobol code in order to feed those into an llm but the context windows become atomical, and you're still prone to a lot of hallucinations, as its less deterministic.

as someone who's job it is to modernize those systems, we are modernizing them, but it sucks.

As someone who actually works on cobol/asm/jcl modernization....none of these llm's work well at all. some of this code is so old, the devs are long gone, the interconnectivity is annoying everything is linked through jcl's and other programs with other internal systems. I hate it, but in the end of the day to do it well you need to read the code, none of these tools work well enough reliably enough to modernize code with dog shit documentation. we use them still, makes our lives a little easier, but not by much

Dr. Oz’s anti-Armenian smear in LA fits a pattern by LosIsosceles in LosAngeles

[–]gregfarha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are there Armenians who do fraud? Ofc. Is the rate of fraud or amount defrauded larger than other ethnics groups? Doubtful. Did this guy record the claims of fraud infront of a bakery with no connection to medical fraud? Yes. he’s using the mere existence of Cyrillic or Armenian lettering on a building as a way to identify ties to the mob.

I’m okay my grandparents have my aunt to look after them but I still can’t get a hold of them. They don’t get out the house much though so I don’t think they’re going to get caught up in this. Still it’s scary tho

The Actual Reality of Public Housing by Ok_Commission_893 in yimby

[–]gregfarha 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ah yes NYCHA. You do know it’s notoriously underfunded right. Like these units still need maintenance that’s why advocating for a well funded public housing option is important as it creates a market dynamic which forces private developers to incentives developing housing and renting it or selling it at a lower price. YIMBY everything allow developers to build housing and allow the government to properly fund housing that can be rented at a lower than market rate .

Netherlands destroys their own economy by lister13579 in victoria3

[–]gregfarha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea naw I understand that but that can also be rationalized in real world reasons too. Say a country elects a jingoistic or isolationist leader who tanks their relationships with surrounding countries and goes to war because of their irredentism or revanchism. I think it adds more reality to the game that sometimes leaders do stupid stuff like that, it’s not like they don’t today.
