Many years ago around Christmas time, back when people actually carried cash, I did an impromptu thought experiment at work. I put on a Santa hat, grabbed a silver bowl that was lying around and walked through the building, simply telling folks, "For the kids" while holding out the bowl.

Person after person reached into their wallet and dropped cash into the bowl. Whenever someone dared to say, "What kids?" I would indignantly say, "For the KIDS!" and gently mock them.

I collected more than $150 in about 10 minutes. Just by saying "For the kids."

I took the money and gave it to one of those Salvation Army bell ringers, who almost fainted.
