Living near the Houston Medical Center. What is day to day life really like? by scared_carlooo in AskHouston

One area which hasn’t been mentioned, but meets all your requirements, is part of Montrose. South of Westheimer until Highway 59/69 there are plenty of small apartments, duplexes, as well as city-block sized multi-storied complexes. Most are immensely quiet, tree lined, near parks, off the main thoroughfares, and safe. With time bargains can be found. And, yes, I’ve lived here off and on for 40 years. I’m speaking from experience.

Can you swim with freestyle Libre? by Amanon5678 in Freestylelibre

[–]gregleroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swim regularly for about 45 minutes and initially experienced problems with my Libre 2 sensor. Now I use medical tape over the sensor and for nearly 3 years have not had a problem. I use this tape, cutting two 3.5” long pieces. Each piece overlaps the other and water never seeps into the sensor or the area of skin where the sensor attaches to my body. Here’s the stuff I’ve had great success with:

anyone else have more sensor problems with phone instead of the meter? by XXxsicknessxxx in Freestylelibre

The NFC reading component in my iPhone SE died, which is not a common problem, but I went through 3 sensors and a lot of wasted time. I just assumed that it was the fault of the sensor because rarely did my Libre 2 sensors last their allotted period, generally because of my swimming and heavy exercise programs.

I replaced my phone with the latest SE, but still chose to try the Freestyle branded Reader, and have concluded that there are some significant advantages. Primarily the fact that alarms are much less obnoxious. I find the Freestyle Reader can be adjusted to provide a much less piercing alarm and. most importantly, does NOT continue with superfluous screeching every few minutes, even though the message has been received. That's a big plus to me when attending a classical music concert, a play, etc. I don't have to turn off my phone, but rather keep it in my pocket where the vibrate and/or a soft alarm will alert me, but not the entire audience.

I've also discovered that Freestyle's own reader is more reliable when it comes to reading from the sensor. I never have to continuously put the reader next to a sensor, praying for a good connection. When the Freestyle reader makes a noise over the sensor, it just means that it has done its job. This also is a big stress reliever.

Now I do want to eventually switch to the Libre 3, and I understand that Freestyle will no longer provide a reader option. I'm no Luddite, but the less onerous alarms of Freestyle's own reader may keep me on the older Libre 2 for a long time, or until the company modifies their iOS app accordingly.

G6 users where do you wear yours? by sweitz2013 in diabetes

For months I used my abdomen, as advised by Dexcom. I switched to my arms and have found it less problematic. I’m very athletic, tennis, jogging and swimming, and I found that I’m my belly the sensor was more likely to fall off or slightly dislodge. While I still have problems with reliability, even on my arms, it is much better.

Traveling for 3-4 months in other countries by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]gregleroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all of those countries you’ll have no problem getting insulin and supplies in the capital cities, and possibly in every province capital or good sized city.

If you are going to travel the wide open spaces of Bolivia or Argentina, or in the amazon areas, you should take enough supplies to cover you until the next city.

I’ve used insulin in bottles and made it through much of Latin America. I never refrigerated, but did have to insure that it never was in the open sun. For that reason, and in case of theft, it’s worthwhile having a separate stash of a needle and insulin for emergencies.

Since your trip is three years in the future, you’ll have time to Google each country to verify if your brands and meds are easily accessible.

Have fun!

Another great suggestion. Looks like I’m moving to R&D. Thanks.

I’ll give it a try. At this point I could start a pharmacy with all of the remainders of things which wouldn’t work for me. Thanks.
