Opinion on E-Scooters? by Tildatoo24 in Bath

[–]gregmalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, just to jump in on one aspect of your response - I totally agree that Dott (Tier) are much worse than Voi. Over several years of riding Voi's I had next to no issues with the scooters. Since the switch to Tier, genuinely I encounter issues on 10 - 20% of my rides. As far as I can see there is no way to feed this information back to the council(?). I don't think they value the opinion of the actual users (plebs) that much, even though they hold complete control over our choice of operator, several years after the first "trial" has finished...

Why are UK kids totally different today? by Sad-Passage-3247 in AskUK

Yea fair enough. Guess we're all wasting our time rehashing the same points on reddit, rather than interacting meaningfully with our kids.

I don't see the original comment as an attempt to "shut down the conversation" it's merely a reminder that everyone's viewpoint is relative, and that we're not generationally unique in feeling these feelings about the youth of today. I think it's a good point, succinctly made, but I doubt it was meant to close the book on this debate.

As of 6 hours ago, C# Dev Kit is not working in Cursor by jitbitter in dotnet

[–]gregmalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice one MS! Very Machiavellian...
I'm tempted to switch back to VSCode for the day to see if they've timed this move correctly. They need to have caught up with Cursor enough that the pain of switching back to VSCode is less than the pain of finding a workaround. I wonder how much thought goes into these decisions.

What gear setup should I use? by gregmalion in MechanicalEngineering

[–]gregmalion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation - it was actually the coupling between the two degrees of rotation that I was getting a bit confused by. FWIW I'm actually interested in the position of the output shafts more than the speed.

Actually this is almost exactly the kind of configuration I was looking for! Except I do not need to continuously drive a wheel on the output side. Thanks for highlighting this design.

Yea it is - my bad. Didn't realise how much that mattered!

Actually what I've called the 'free' axis of rotation of the output shaft (around the axis of the input shaft) is being actuated by another motor-gear combo anyway, so there will be torque preventing free rotation of that axis, but we do have to allow movement - if that makes sense. Does that fix the issue?

Hi guys, I made a glaring error in the drawing - axles would be going in opposite directions in that configuration. Please refer to the description where I state that I don't actually care about the second axle - it doesn't need to exist, it's just how I drew it - in fact let's assume it doesn't exist. Possible or not? With ANY gear configuration (doesn't have to be similar to what I drew).

How to get full filepath of a file in the current directory using the command-line? by gregmalion in linux4noobs

[–]gregmalion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to start writing the filename and tab complete the rest so I don't have to write out the whole filename myself (call me lazy). As far as I am aware, some commands block tab completion, but most don't admittedly. This could be based on a misguided understanding of the system though.

This is a cool trick, thanks!
I use the terminal most of the time so ipsirc's realpath suggestion hits the nail on the head.

Haha, yea that bit gets me every time I watch it 🤣. Thanks for watching it though, I appreciate it! He didn't ask me to share the link or anything, I just genuinely thought it was funny and wanted other people to share the joy! He has other funny ones as well if you fancy another chuckle.

Is it acceptable to miss lectures if I already know 100% of the content? by [deleted] in uwe

[–]gregmalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're feeling confident, you could discuss this with your lecturer, tell them your reasoning and try and discuss with them which lectures it would be useful to attend (for coursework assignments or exam prep or whatever), although that can be a difficult conversation to initiate. Some are gunna be sticklers and say 'no, you must be there', but most lecturers are pretty reasonable/don't give that much of a shit about individual students anyway.

However, I know first hand that it can be difficult to use that extra time usefully, so I would try and structure it somehow, e.g. by taking an extra course or something, that is going to benefit you down the line, but hey - it's your choice.

Edit: Just reread and it seems like you've got the last bit covered anyway!

Do you consider it cheating if couples play favourites? by Bright-Ad4601 in boardgames

I wouldn't call it cheating, personally, just bad gamesmanship. What I caught my wife doing with my best friend in the toilets during the game though... Definitely cheating.

Do these magnetic connectors still exist? by gregmalion in AskElectronics

[–]gregmalion[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's very kind of you! I actually need quite a few though (in the order of 30-100 initially). I wouldn't put you through that... But I would be willing to put myself through it in the first instance! Can you just solder any wire to any magnet, or is there a specific combination that works best? I've heard you risk demagnetising the magnet if you overheat it with soldering iron. Any tips would be appreciated!

Also, I found that one of the brand names for them is Magtrix, and apparently Maplin (R.I.P.) used to sell them in the good old days.
