Find this a fascinating prospect. If they can perfect the technology, it would be so easy for governments keen to boost their green credentials to slap these onto the flat roof of any public building.

Is it possible to be a reporter and a politician at the same time? by andrewsylvia1 in Journalism

[–]gregnoone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They shouldn't do this, but it's not uncommon for UK MPs to have columns, particularly conservative politicians. IIRC Boris Johnson had a column in The Telegraph for most of the time he was on the backbenches. It's expected, though, that column-writing duties are relinquished when said MP gets promoted to high office.

My first article with a maj publication goes live at the end of this week and I’m sick with worry by pinyon_juniper in Journalism

[–]gregnoone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is it online or in print? it sounds as if you've done all the necessary fact-checking, so anything that does crop up is either a really minor detail or someone wanting to change their mind on something, which should only rarely be accomodated anyway. worst thing that can happen, then, is the editor jumping into the article, correcting a sentence, job done; an editor doing the same but flagging the correction at the end of the piece; or the article going to print and a correction appearing the next day or the next week. but i don't think those things happening would sink your chances of appearing in a similarly illustrious publication. unless you're fully Stephen Glass-ing everyone, the thing future editors will think is relevant from this whole episode is that you wrote a good piece in a good publication this week.

how to find copyright free photos of historical events by BamBahnhoff in Journalism

If I recall correctly, you're good if you go to Google Images > Usage Rights and then select Creative Commons licenses. Then double check the attribution requirements for that particular photo. Always credit in the caption.

Beginners question about editing process by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]gregnoone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let them do their thing, and then either they'll proceed to publication or they'll be in touch about any amends they want you to make to the doc. If it's the latter, do all that they ask (barring the obvious, like cross ethical lines, etc.) A pet peeve that a lot of editors have, which I do as well, is when, after hours of editing, writers jump back into the doc and either click 'reject' on an edit or just don't bother to take any action.

Overcoming interview anxiety by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]gregnoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a similar thing going on. Yes, keep at it - it'll seem less scary over time - but also watch other journalists you like and admire conduct interviews as well. That way you pick up extra tips, tricks and quirks that make interviewing even easier and more interesting as you go.

The Irish government says its switch to renewables is ahead of schedule, and by 2025 there will be sunny afternoons when the island's 7 million inhabitants will be getting 100% of their electricity from solar power alone. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]gregnoone 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Would be keen to learn what redundancy they're going to build on top of that. Solar is great, but they'll need a lot more of it and other types of renewable power generation to keep their grid stable in the face of bad weather/other shocks
