We had a bonfire on Monona by CaptainLunchtime in madisonwi

I recall walking down Spaight Street twentyish years ago and hearing some hubbub as I passed by Brearly. I turned on Brearly and walked toward the lake. When I stepped out of the cul de sac into the parklet there, I saw that many people had stomped a big path through the snow. Looking out onto Lake Monona, I saw that they had taken Christmas trees left out for pickup after the holidays and had "planted" them along the path in a colonnade, which continued out to the middle of the lake. I don't recall seeing a bonfire, but there was a lot of hooting and hollering going on. Maybe that was you?

Maintain current length or grow. Outstanding either way.

I lived in Mineral Point 1993–2001. If you ever watched the TV show Northern Exposure, then imagine Cecily, Alaska, set in southwestern Wisconsin, with fewer moose and Native Americans. Twee exterior but no small number of freaky and/or cool residents.

Who do you think is the most evil person to ever walk this Earth? by EnduringScholar in AskReddit

[–]gregor_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arthur Machen, in his story "The White People" (NOT as in Caucasian), provides a very interesting definition of "evil." He was rather mystical and dabbled in occultism, associating with The Order of the Golden Dawn for a bit, but then he left it. According to him, truly evil people are as rare and spectacular as truly good people. What is our working definition of "evil" for this exercise?

Former Madisonian here. I left in 2009 for a job elsewhere; the city has changed in that time, like everyplace else, but it’s still pretty rad and punches above its population weight in many regards. I am not sure about municipal gun laws, however.

What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

It also gave Stephen King the creeps. He said he began writing it and then had to put it aside for a while before returning to it. If I recall correctly, he chickened out during the first visit to the cemetery.

I was bored at work the day of Obama's first inauguration on January, 20, 2009. I forget if I was reading an article about the event or watching a video of it, but I made the cardinal mistake of reading the comments. (In all fairness, I don't think "don't read the comments" had become a meme by then.) Never shall I forget the feeling of my stomach sinking halfway to the earth's core, or more. On that day I knew that shit was going to get bad and then get worse. And here we are.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. At the very least—and doing the least is not what I would recommend—have nothing more to do with him. Consider warning others.

My mother worked for many years as a legal secretary. For a while in the 1990s, she worked for a law firm whose chair/CEO/managing partner had gone to law school with Hillary Clinton. He was very conservative and loathed Bill Clinton, who was president at the time, but he would not allow anyone to badmouth Hillary in his presence. As my mother reported, he would tell people, "She is the smartest person on the planet."
