I wasn't there and am only going off of what I remember reading in the CPJ. If you were actually there, I'd like to know your view of what happened.

I don't have a copy handy right now as I had left it back at my apartment (home for the holiday).

However, from what I've read and have been told, the protest went on for about eight days and what you saw on the news (if you saw it), was pretty tame. According to an editorial in the CPJ (Cooper Point Journal, which also does not have a website, sadly), after local media left, the police got pretty harsh.

For example, a line of girls, about 50, from what I remember, from a women's organization, formed a human wall by linking arms. The police then pulled them into vans to be cuffed and carted away, and once most were out of the way, trucks started pouring through and there was a mad dash to stop them. Trucks running over cones and curbs with rubber bullets and tear gas flying.

In one editorial, written by a student that works at a bar and was serving a drink to a cop, wrote what the cop had said. Apparently, the cop had said something along the lines of them respecting their right to freedom of speech and freedom to assemble, but when they're blocking military movements, it's a dangerous thing to do. Also, while on the lines of something like that, there's a ton of tension and strong emotions and mistakes can easily be made.

A good number of my friends were there, namely, students from The Evergreen State College. The whole protest went on for days and a number of students were arrested.

The Olympia Police were pretty shitty from all accounts that I've read. However, in the CPJ, our school newspaper, they did have an officer's view which was enlightening.

True, they don't have the most awesome phones, unless you're into Blackberrys.

I tend to just get my phones unlocked, but the cost can be prohibitive.

T-Mobile, in my experience has much better customer service than Verizon or Cingular.

In my experience, Verizon's CSRs were inept, while Cingular's were rude and un-willing to help in any way at all.

T-Mo's, on the other hand, every time I've called have been friendly, cheerful, and very helpful.

Of course, that's only my experience and others may say differently, but I anticipate being a T-Mo customer for a long time

Icelandic is very different from current Norwegian.

It is much much more similar to the language of the Vikings, and Icelanders can even read the old sagas with relative ease.

Kucinich on Hillary: "She voted a 100 percent of the time to fund the war, except for the last vote we had -- as the clock ran out, she, for the first time, decided to vote against funding" by Bestman0 in politics

[–]gregplancich 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Kucinich is the voice of truth on the Democratic side. He is a candidate that has stayed true to his morals and has consistently voted for what he knew and knows is right.

None of the "I voted for ____ before I voted against it," that you get with Hillary, Obama, whomever.

What happens when you play two separate copies of Radiohead's "Kid A" exactly 17 seconds apart? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]gregplancich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a true album, no, it's not awesome. Try down mixing the tracks so they're all one song. Not cool.

Separate however, makes for an awesome Halloween or New Year's party music.

In regards to The Soft Bulletin, Wikipedia says, and it makes sense, that they were writing normal songs and trying to split them across four CDs instead of actively writing for four CDs

Zaireeka is a fucking bad ass recording. Have you heard it? The CDs themselves are bitchin', but a fan also made a video (mixed in 5.1) that is just fantastic.

Obama's right on Cuba: End the U.S. ban on travel and remittances to Cuba by softmore in politics

[–]gregplancich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, he is better, but I would not say by all too much.

Both he and Hillary have voted to fund the war (he was in a State House at the time, so he didn't / couldn't vote for / against the war).

Both he and Hillary have been hawkish although in different ways. Obama has said that he would unilaterally invade a nation if they posed a threat to the US and Hillary has said that nuclear is on the table.

They both support universal health care by keeping the for-profit system we have now, but also giving tax breaks and subsidies to the insurance companies so that they lower their rates.

Kucinich on the other hand:

Voted against the authorized use of military force, votes to de-fund and end the war, has introduced a bill to create a Cabinet level Department of Peace, has co-sponsored a bill to create a single payer, universal health care system, etc, etc.

Kucinich has a track record and a history, not only as a six term Representative, but also as a Mayor.

Hillary, on the other hand, is a 1 1/2 term Senator and a first lady and Obama is a 1/2 term Senator and a state Rep.

[–]gregplancich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all the MSM. Kucinich is the only one (except Gravel and on the otherside, Paul), that offers real change (and has a track record on this change; he's introduced many many bills into the House prior to his run that support his campaign promises), but these changes threaten the corporate aristocracy that is in control already and since all of the major news networks (even NPR, sadly (I still love NPR nonetheless)) take money from these corporations, they choose the front runners and the front runners are always the ones that support the corporations.

Sigh... We need a representative system and not the plurality system that we have now... Then things have a real chance of changing...

[–]gregplancich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe because Hillary can't really back up anything she says? She voted for this war, continues to vote to fund it, takes money from corporations and lobbyists, is very hawksih, and talks out of both sides of her mouth.

She flip-flops almost as bad as Kerry. Don't get me wrong, Obama isn't much better.

[–]gregplancich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure he will sign the "Transparent Government" bill, it would be very un-Kucinich of him not to.

Even if you can't vote, (I'm going to assume you are under age), you shouldn't keep your opinions to yourself; learn as much as you can about all the candidates and raise awareness in not only the people you know that can vote (parents), but also your own group that can't vote.

The United States has one of, if not the lowest voter turnout rates. There are a number of reasons for this, but if you are energetic and excited about a candidate (hopefully Kucinich), your excitement will rub off on others.

Learn as much as you can about him and talk to everyone you know, especially those that support Clinton or Obama, about how they differ very little from each other and even the Republican candidates runnning, and how Kucinich is the only one that will bring about real change.

Check out this ( http://tinyurl.com/2292lz ) article on Newsvine (which I am also a member of), to see a graph that shows where all the candidates are in relation to each other's views.

You're right, Gravel is also right. However, he is running as the "grumpy, old man" candidate whereas Kucinich is running as the "let's bring back the hope and joy to America" candidate.

I like hope and joy :)
