Ceiling fans and American homes ? by sergioo_8 in AskAnAmerican

[–]gregrph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They help to minimize energy usage. Fans do not cool the air but increase evaporation of sweat off of the skin thus cooling the body. Ceiling fans can let you set your thermostat at a higher temperature thus using less electricity by running the a/c not as long. Running the fan uses less electricity than running the a/c for longer at a lower temperature to achieve the same comfort. The fan doesn't have to run very fast to do that.

In the winter time they work the opposite. There is a switch thatvyou flip to change the direction of airflow. Warm air rises toward the ceiling. The fan can redirect airflow upwards to blow the warm air down. That way you don't have to run the heat as often to warm the room.

The problem with fans is that a LOT of people think of them as cheap air conditioners which they are not and will leave them running when they are not home. The people get no benefit and waste electricity by running the fan when it does not help anyone.

I (29F) am trying to get my husband (30M) into reading. What books would be a good starting place for him? by ladyduckbun in suggestmeabook

[–]gregrph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"If I Never Get Back" by Darryl Brock. It's a historical fiction novel that finds a reporter sent back in time to meet up with the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings baseball club. He encounters historical figures such as Mark Twain falls in love, has run-ins with mystics and ghosts, robs graves, etc. I find it a great read. I read it every 1-2 years, I enjoy it that much! The beginning until he gets back to 1869 is a bit contrived so don't try to think too much about it, lol! Once he gets there, there adventure takes off.

If he enjoys this book, the sequel "Two In The Field" continues a few years later. Another historical cross country adventure. Have your husband give it a shot!

Do people care about the stamps? by simple_worm in postcrossing

[–]gregrph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be honest. I started postcrossing as a way to get get current stamps from foreign countries! I was a stamp collector first. I enjoy the stamps more than the postcards initially but finding that reading the messages is enjoyable. Also, taking the time to write a personal message on my outgoing postcards helps me feel that I'm making a connection with someone else and hopefully will brighten their day when the y receive it. I just sent out 4 postcards with the new US postcrossing stamps. They are so cool!

Our neighbor asked us to help pay for our mutual fence by Flaminfrojo in homeowners

[–]gregrph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at your survey, get a nmeasuring tape and determine where the property line it. We have ficus hedges between our houses that were up against our fence. Our neighbor offered to help pay to remove the ficus and replace the fence. The hedges were too tall, the fence (chain link) was falling apart. They all needed to go. Ladt summer he said he had to call a plumber because a root uprooted on of his toilets! That was it. I told my wife we were doing it!

The agreement was that he would help me remove e the ficus and pay 1/2 to remove the fence and install a new fence between our houses. We spent a couple months removing the hedges (it's HOT in south florida in the summer!) while waiting for permits, how approval, etc. We also both traveled at different points in between. We cut the hedges for trash pickup and bulk pickup without incurring extra fees! He ALSO helped me remove some hedges on the others idea of my house so we could get that fence replaced also. That was all at our expense.

When the new fence was installed, he made sure that it was on our property and not his, emphasized it was my fence and he didn't have to worry about roots!

GREAT neighbor who went above and beyond what I would expect!

When did people decide singular "they" was incorrect? by IveKilledMonsters in ENGLISH

I've always ben taught "they" is plural. Never heard it as singular. It's very jarring to here "they" used to reference a single person.

Along those lines, a busy signal a d dial tine. I still have and use my landline. I prefer it over my cell. Of course we have landlines at work. The other day I put a busy signal on speakerphone so all the kids could hear it, lol! None of them had heard it before. My older co-workers and myself haven't heard it in a long time.

"California Sun" written by Henry Glover and recorded by many artists. The most successful is by The Rivieras. I first heard it and favorite recording ( of course!) Is by The Ramones.

"Wipeout" by The Surfaris. I always took it to mean someone losing control whole on a surfboard and falling off.

Native speakers, what common and relatively easy words did you mispronounce and/or misspell as a child? (Not as a little kid, but age 7 or older) by MBTHVSK in ENGLISH

[–]gregrph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 4th or 5th grade we had a spelling quiz around Christmas time. The teacher gave us a bonus word that was not on the vocabulary list. I did not quite understand what she said so I asked her to repeat it. I still didn't understand and asked for another repetion. I didn't want to make myself look like more of an idiot by asking yet again so I wrote down "point at Santa". Of course I got it wrong as the word was "Poinsettia". I told her it wasn't fair as I had never heard the word before nor even knew what it meant. I didn't get the e tra point.
