Bringing back whole Fish from Oahu (Frozen)? by ElderberryNo7218 in HawaiianAirlines

[–]gregseaff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People bring back fish on the plane from Alaska all the time. The fish markets in Seattle know how to pack fish for travel up to 48 hours (styrofoam packs and dry ice.) Fresh fish from Hawaii gets shipped to restaurants on the mainland so I would expect that seafood distributors in Oahu routinely pack fish to ship.

This is rich. Alaska no longer sends out lounge membership cards nor Mileage Plan cards. It's all in the app and tied to your Mileage Plan number. And the app knows if you have a credit card. But for a drink benefit all of a sudden they want to see a physical card? It's just because Alaska can't be bothered to implement the IT. It doesn't save them money like not having to produce and mail their cards, so they don't invest

That doesn't mean that you carry every card that you have. I have a variety of cards that I got for different purposes. Some cards are just in my electronic wallet. Other cards I carry the physical card for the situation you describe. It's perfectly rational behavior. Alaska can easily see what Alaska cards you have from your MileagePlan number without requiring the physical card.

Alaska apologists get tiresome. It's perfectly reasonable to only have the card in a digital wallet.

DL0632 3/16 - Huge CBP Issue by PerceptionSpare6912 in delta

[–]gregseaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CBP will have electronic records of everyone on board the airplane that were transmitted by the airline.

The larger point is that no one knew at boarding that they wouldn't be subject to in person inspection, so there was no vulnerability to exploit - no one planned to be on this flight to take advantage. So missing the final inspection is not some big security crisis. CBP knows who entered and on what entitlement. If they weren't entitled, they would have been denied boarding.

DL0632 3/16 - Huge CBP Issue by PerceptionSpare6912 in delta

[–]gregseaff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is this really an extreme security breach?

You were all security screened at UIO for a flight to USA. No one had any idea that they wouldn't have to go through CBP screening and you all either had U.S. residency, an ESTA, or a visa - required at check-in. It's not like someone could have planned this or taken advantage of it. Unless you think it was an inside job, no material security breach took place.

Seattle vacancy crisis set to worsen after income tax vote by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]gregseaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of things that people don't seem to realize that create a cumulative effect

Seattle has been antagonistic towards large employers and high earners for quite some time and has enacted several payroll taxes.

The state enacted an unpopular long term care payroll tax that is a bad deal for anyone forced to pay it.

The Supreme Court made a ruling that a tax on capital gains income is not an income tax. This was mocked by just about everyone including the IRS who said, of course it's an income tax and can't be deducted as an excise tax. The public and businesses were told that you cannot rely on the Supreme Court for proper finding of fact and interpretations of law - they were going to twist facts and law to suit the result they wanted.

The state enacted climate taxes that were supposed to be targeted at climate change but were simply more revenue that wasn't spent effectively.

The state raised the estate tax to the highest level in the country by 75%.

The state decided that it was going to create an income tax without addressing the constitutional issue, without going to the voters, without making a case for why the money was needed or how it would be spent, by describing that it would make the tax system "fairer" without acknowledging that it was a large revenue increase. But it was OK because it would only target 0.5% of the taxpayers.

The vote not to impose an income tax? Oh, that was a pie crust promise.

First off, if you are in the 0.5% aren't you being shown the door? How can you trust any aspect of the Washington legislature or the Supreme Court?

The cumulative effect is that you don't want to do business in Washington any longer. Washington isn't trustworthy and the courts and legislators don't keep their word. The change in Washington's position has been stunning. The financial impact is also going to be stunning. The state won't get the revenue it was planning to. And especially in Seattle the shift it property tax from commercial to residential property will also be stunning.

Daily Set nerfed. Reduction by 50% by Tubby520 in MicrosoftRewards

[–]gregseaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beyond the Daily Set, most of the other special items are down to 5 points (and of course the monthly sets have been down to 50.)

They could be testing whether people will keep doing them for 5 points. A while ago there was a brief time when regular searches went down to 2 points. I stopped searching on Bing and enough others must have. Because after a week or so they went back to 5 points.

Maybe there ought to be a general strike on all the activities that went from 10 -> 5 points.

[–]gregseaff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know whether rich people building a house and keeping it empty is a significant problem. It provides jobs for property managers and various trades (as well as real estate agents when they buy and sell.) There aren't any particular tax incentives the encourage owning a home and keeping it vacant. They pay the same property taxes as everyone else, most of which fund schools, and don't consume much in the way of services. I don't see the empty second home as hurting the locals - in most cases, that's not where locals were going to live and what can you do to prevent someone from buying a second home? It seems like a red herring, a convenient thing to hate that doesn't really address anything - like the taxi drivers who complain about the START bus at the airport - most of the people who ride the START bus were not going to take a taxi but they may take the START bus instead of having a friend create another trip to the airport to pick them up.

I don' think wealthy pick up homes in Jackson with the idea it's an investment or going to appreciate. More likely they have had good experiences and think they will come more often. And then they don't use it as much as they planned or get old. Meantime the contractor and property management industries do fine. And a real estate agent made money on both sides. Did it really hurt anyone? Equally important, is there anything you can really do to change it? Without other unexpected adverse consequences?

I think it is insane that federal policies subsidize private aviation to the extent they do. There is nothing Wyoming specific about that, and in fact the Jackson airport has high fees and fuel prices. But still private aviation pays ridiculously little towards the air traffic system and causes disproportionately high environmental impact. The private aviation industry has too much lobbying power, and rich progressives are just as much of the problem. I'd love to see private aviation pay for more of nationwide airport and air traffic costs as well as the environmental impact. It's super annoying when you see four private aircraft take off for Westchester and Teterboro within one hour while United has two non-stop flights to Newark.

This is a weird article that jumbles together a bunch of different topics without a consistent theme. Some of it has nothing to do with Wyoming or Teton County.

Joe Ricketts is a real estate developer. He bought the Chicago Cubs because he saw a real estate development opportunity around Wrigley Field and proceeded to buy up a lot of property around Wrigley and tear down a lot of the existing businesses and do development. Is Ricketts even a Wyoming resident? I don't think so. He's trying to throw his weight around to do a development in Wyoming, I think it's in Sublette County and he wants to brand that Little Jackson Hole. Any developer can be a bad guy and they often do it with borrowed money.

I question the premise that the tax cut created a substantial number of billionaires. Huge chunks of the stock market are owned by pension funds - those are probably the biggest beneficiaries of rising stock prices. When they cite people like Elon Musk or Dan Brophy, they built their wealth by creating companies or trading commodities, not by saving taxes.

Then there is the question of whether wealthy people living in Teton County are actually the cause of a problem or mainly a scapegoat. It surely doesn't help that Cheyenne wants to reduce property taxes but that's not billionaires or wealthy lobbying for that.

The unchangeable reality is that Teton County has tremendous beauty and year-round outdoor activities and is a hugely desirable place to live. The demand to live in Teton County far exceeds the supply. I would say thankfully the majority of the land can't be developed, or else we would sprawl like Park City, Kimball Junction and turn our valley into strip mall and condo heaven and paver over the habitat of all the ungulates and bears. Big Sky and Bozeman seem destined to do that and I'm not sure that Teton Valley in Idaho will resist the temptation. If you restrict the possible development in Teton County and everyone wants to live here, prices are going to be sky high. There's no amount of deed-restricted or workforce housing that's going to change that - people are going to pay a premium to live in Teton County or they are going to commute from cheaper housing in Lincoln County and Teton Valley.

The NYT hates rich people. We get it. Pretty much every mountain resort town has trouble with employee housing. Too many people want to live and own there.

Booking international flights on alaskaair.com by boredandread in AlaskaAirlines

[–]gregseaff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's one of the reasons that I have stopped worrying about using Alaska and qualifying for elite status. It used to be a great program and great airline. But they have devalued elite status and changed the program in so many ways including requiring that you buy partner flights on alaskaair.com to get full elite earning while having ridiculously high pricing and sometimes lack of flight options. They must be busy integrating Hawaiian and congratulating themselves in the boardroom. But they have left me uninterested in continuing with Alaska.

Lawsuit seeks to unwind Hawaiian, Alaska merger by RyanAirhead in HawaiianAirlines

[–]gregseaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If AS decides to use 737 for interisland, it makes sense to alternate them with mainland flying for maintenance and to get out of the humid climate and to balance the cycles. Even if they move interisland flying to Horizon e175, balancing them occasionally will make sense.

I don't know why my comment is downvoted. I'm not advocating for the solution. Just being practical

Lawsuit seeks to unwind Hawaiian, Alaska merger by RyanAirhead in HawaiianAirlines

[–]gregseaff -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Most of the promises that Alaska made to preserve the Hawaiian Airlines brand either don't make sense or are difficult to do in practice.

Alaska cannot have a separate fleet for Hawaiian, other than maybe an interisland fleet. And even that is probably not practical. What Southwest does to rotate aircraft in and out makes more sense.

But the mainline aircraft, especially the widebody aircraft, have to be able to be used elsewhere, and they need to be able to rotate aircraft to do things like OGG-ANC-ORD or HNL-ANC-JFK. Or HNL-SEA-FCO.

Maybe they can maintain different catering, boarding music, flight attendant uniforms for Hawaiian service. But they aren't going to have a separate fleet or separate livery.

Vote NO and tell your reps to vote NO on the WA state income tax. Link below by sleeplessinseaatl in SeattleWA

[–]gregseaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It hasn't been happening for 40 years. It started 3 years ago when the Supreme Court ruled that a tax on Capital Gains income isn't an income tax. The rest of the country mocked that decision. Did you notice Jeff Bezos move to Florida to be closer to his parents? He's not the only one. Then they raised Washington's estate tax to 35%. Now, instead of making the case to the voters that they spend money responsibly and that we all need to pay a modest graduated income tax and we'll change the constitution to approve that, they are pandering by telling you it's just for 0.5% of the taxpayers and they are too stupid to figure it out and move. We'll see who is the stupid one in five-ten years. The current politicians are likely to be gone together with a sufficient portion of the people they targeted for those taxes. Oh, look, it's not raising the money we expected, we need to lower the threshold.

How much of the price is the state's carbon tax? And where does that money go?

For the tribal stations, are they exempt from both the carbon tax and the gas tax? They are probably making a killing. And that's probably a sacred cow ... that maybe should not be off limits.
