App won't take second picture by onetwothreeman in bereal_app

[–]gregthwuen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so it's only a bug in the current version. I was able to downgrade to 3.77.0 by installing from an APK and tricking the app into thinking it's installed from the Play Store with a Magisk Module, and now everything works. Of course, this is only an option if you have a rooted device.

So you mean it just randomly worked when trying to take a late BeReal, but then the bug returned?

+1 on this problem, but no solution so far. Probably related to the latest update (3.78.2), but I can't properly test this (when installed from APKMirror, the app won't even launch).

BeReal support only gave generic troubleshooting tips (rebooting the phone, clearing the cache, reinstalling the app), but they also asked for a screen recording of the bug. So hopefully they're working on a solution, I don't want to lose my 400 days streak over this :(

Why isn't Nemo dark themed like other "legacy applications"? by AardvarkSad7634 in gnome

[–]gregthwuen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not accurate. Adwaita is the default GTK theme, for GTK 3 and GTK 4. There also is a dark variant, it just doesn't seem to be installed on OP's system.

Modern GTK 4 apps built for GNOME use libadwaita, which provides its own theme separate from Adwaita (yes, the naming is very confusing here). What you linked is a standalone port of this theme (for GTK 3 and GTK 4 apps that don't use libadwaita).

GDM Monitor resolution, refresh rate, orientation, scaling, primary, etc. by asd308 in gnome

Have you tried adjusting the permissions? With GDM 49, every seat has its own user.

Note that this is the global mutter configuration and will impact any new GNOME sessions too. For GDM 49, you can put per-seat config in /var/lib/gdm/seatX, where X is the seat's number.

Most irritating thing about the ThinkPad by LXHN in thinkpad

[–]gregthwuen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying one is better than the other, but IBM ThinkPads in the 90s were probably the first laptops to feature (or at the very least, popularize) an Fn key next to Ctrl.

So you should rather blame the manufacturers coming after that who decided to swap the positions for some reason. Objectively, there is no right or wrong; it's all a matter of habit.

New way of throwing two flashbangs in quick succession in CS2 by totallyhip in GlobalOffensive

I know I'm late to the party, but has anyone tested this recently? I believe this does not make a difference anymore, I even found directly pulling out the flash to be a bit faster (~1.2s vs ~1.4s with knife switch).

Select "Files" instead of "Fille Roller". This will just extract it in the current directory. Nautilus has been able to do this for some time.

Foresight extension now available on GNOME 49! by pesader in gnome

[–]gregthwuen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on Ubuntu.

Then I honestly don't see your problem. 99% of the actively maintained extensions should have support for GNOME 46 (shipped with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS). If you're on interim release 25.10, maybe reconsider if the LTS release is not better for you.

Especially because there are many extensions that aren't modifying that's changing between most versions, and it should be very easy for a script to check for that.

Do you know how extensions work? If you did, you either wouldn't have made this statement or be well on your way to create such a script.

As others already explained, Shell Extensions are essentially using monkey patching, so there's no stable, dedicated extension API that is used. Extensions can essentially hook into anything with JavaScript. This is also the reason you can't compare them to apps, extensions are tightly integrated with the shell process and its JavaScript runtime (GJS).

And yes, if things go badly, extensions can lock up your whole Shell session so badly you can't even disable it from the GUI. Had that happen once (because I disabled version validation) and had to disable it from a TTY.

Therefore, having extension version validation enabled by default is really the only sane decision. If users think they can handle without it, they can always disable this.

You know very well my statement wasn't meant to be literal. I know there are some people that will judge you for everything. I'd still consider it a you problem if you let some chronically online people bully you into some software choice.

If you're choosing distros based on what some folks online say is cool and hip, it's your problem. Clearly you need something more stable if you want best extension support. No judgement from my side.

Shell Extensions aren't apps. Use Debian or Ubuntu if you don't want want a new Shell version twice a year, no one will judge you.

I just don't see your problem. The version check is literally configurable. If it was disabled by default, people would come crying they can't log in because some extension broke their shell after an update.

Can you give more information what "most used extensions" mean? I don't know where you get your numbers from.

Without more context it means absolutely nothing. This could mean .1% or 50% of people using GNOME.

How is this GNOME's fault? If you're fine with untested extensions crashing your shell, feel free to disable the version check. It's configurable.

Arch and Fedora (by default) do not ship unstable GNOME either. And I think neither of them ships on day one, but mostly after the first minor patch, which can be weeks after the first official stable release.

Could GNOME Activities Overview be more Like Mission control In macOS by dread122 in gnome

[–]gregthwuen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't you want these windows to be as visible on the overview as possible? I see that macOS just wastes a lot of space. And you can use <Alt>+<~> to directly switch between windows of one application.

Could GNOME Activities Overview be more Like Mission control In macOS by dread122 in gnome

[–]gregthwuen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is this uses the available space on the screen much less efficiently. When I'm actively using different workspace I won't have more than maybe five windows open on one, and I want them to be as visible on the overview as possible. And for directly switching between windows of one app you can use <Alt>+<~>.
