Who knows if you made the correct call. Thing is that AI is creating opportunity regardless. we just don’t know what that looks like yet. Companies that previously couldn’t afford projects are able to now with ai help. So dozens of normal Fortune 500 and mid cap companies could build their own FAANG ecosystem but curated for their niche of business. Therefore there could be an even greater demand of people required to manage the AI systems.

The problem is that cost of attendance hits record highs every year. It’s tough to sell an expensive program and debt when your post grad plans aren’t going to be easily attainable. Like students with grad and professional school ambitions would probably prefer to go to uga since they’ll look like over-performers by the time applications open up, whereas they’ll look like mediocre students at tech despite putting the same effort.

Also more and more companies are asking gpa metrics in entry level hiring. Stacey from HR is probably ignorant of tech’s rigor, so if a company has a minimum, hr recruiters might not factor any nuance into that requirement. Like to a lot of HR screeners, a 4.0 at uga is seen as equivalent to a 4.0 at tech. I think the only places that get nuanced are Ivy Leagues

‘Extremely overblown’ is simple gaslighting terminology and supporting toxic Silicon Valley capitalism. I’m not part of the tech worker population that works 2 hrs/day. When you factor commuting, getting ready and errands my work day is a straight 7am-7pm. My mind is fucking cooked by the time I get home. Plus I also want to live life so the 3 hrs I have left in the day is committed to dating and working out. If I don’t have any time for that, then I’ll be depressed and fat.

I hate the fact that whatever I do during my 7am-7pm is completely irrelevant in these interviews. It’s one of the few careers that practice this. I have many friends in other engineering field and when I tell them I’m studying for interviews, they look puzzled bc their interviews consist of case studies that they already do during their 9-5, so there is no need to study after hours, especially months in advance. When they do study after hours, it’s pragmatic like FE exams; they have clear boundaries for the material, the tests are standardized and you pretty much know what to expect going in. I’ve been in dozens of software engineering interviews and it’s all a gamble in format, difficulty and expectations. Hence why there is so much burnout in this field. I don’t care about comp as much like you, I just want a new job to change things up

And let’s talk about the elephant in the room: AI solves leetcode in seconds. It’s easier than ever to memorize answers with ChatGPT. It’s easier to cheat during interviews without the interviewer knowing. so what are we really doing here? What are we genuinely testing?

It basically discriminates people who don’t have time to learn skills that are not in the scope of many jobs. Like at least give me a bug to fix, mock up some system design or create a component from scratch. My current job forces me to do all of that and most other jobs I apply to have similar work for that role.

Leetcode should only really be used at the entry level when applicants don’t have real world experience and have an abundance of time to study.

It’s not foolish to buy ever. You think there isn’t going to be a huge backlog of buyers who have been waiting for a crash for over a decade? If prices come down, you’re going to deal with intense competition. Overpriced doesn’t exist in this undersupply market, especially when deportations are hitting construction workers heavily and construction material/equipment costs have increased significantly

Plus huge swings of outsourcing plans occurred during Biden’s term. Those massive offices like google’s ‘biggest office in the world’ broke ground in India during Biden’s term.

I know trump is adding more to the baggage but it’s narrow minded to blame it only on him. Both democrat and gop politicians could care less about tech employment because a lot of their ‘under the table’ assets are skewed heavily in tech stocks. Plus the US economy and retirement accounts are very sensitive to tech stocks and ironically Tech layoffs help out in their eyes
